Laplace operators and their spectral properties are powerful tools for the analysis of networks in the social and the biological sciences and in other domains. In computer science, the theory of families of expander graphs is particularly important. Eigenvalues are also a key for quantifying synchronization and other features of nonlinear dynamics.
Moving beyond the structural antagonism of criminal law, this chapter explores the subject positions of actors in scenarios of sexual harm. If the sex offender emerges as a felon bearing the head of a wolf, the victimized white child emerges as the exemplary figure of vulnerability. While tropes of vulnerability are mobilized to justify paternalistic state coercion, they are also a powerful reminder of humans’ interdependence and mutuality. Thinking with vulnerability as an analytical category focuses attention on the lingering traumatic effects of sexual assault, as well as the severe punitiveness toward sex offenders. Addressing sexual violence does not require draconian penalties; conversely, addressing carceral expansion does not necessitate minimizing sexual violence. Centering vulnerability may allow us to rethink the foundations of our social contract in ways that acknowledge both our precariousness and the sovereign violence that holds us in its thrall.
The aim of this review was to examine what existing low FODMAP diet (LFD) trials can tell us about whether reductions in FODMAP intake plausibly explain symptom improvement in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Although the LFD is an effective treatment, supported by multiple randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses, the mechanisms through which it exerts its effects remain unclear. Symptom improvement is commonly attributed to reduced FODMAP intake, yet this assumption has rarely been evaluated directly. Using a mediation-informed framework, we examined whether published LFD trials assessed two key elements required to support a mechanistic role for FODMAP intake: whether the intervention altered FODMAP intake (a path), and whether variation in intake was associated with symptom outcomes independent of intervention group (b path). We found that evidence for clinical efficacy has not been matched by equivalent evidence explaining how the diet works. While many trials demonstrate that LFD interventions reduce FODMAP intake, few examine whether differences in intake account for differences in symptom improvement between individuals. As a result, it remains uncertain to what extent symptom benefits are driven by FODMAP reduction itself versus other factors accompanying dietary change. Strengthening future trial design to link dietary intake measurement with mechanistic analysis is essential for informing less restrictive, targeted, and personalised dietary strategies in IBS.
Whistleblowing is increasingly viewed as a valuable mechanism to root out misconduct and corruption, yet we know very little about the conditions under which it is used in political parties. Building upon literature from social psychology, this study argues that the decision to blow the whistle on party colleagues is the outcome of a trade-off between two basic moral values that are particularly acute in the case of politicians: fairness and loyalty. Using a novel pre-registered survey experiment with over 1,000 Swedish politicians, this paper establishes that priming values of fairness can increase a politician’s willingness to blow the whistle against fellow party members. However, priming values of loyalty has no effect on whistleblowing intentions relative to control conditions. Results also suggest that severe misconduct is more likely to be reported only when it was committed by an individual rather than the party collectively, and that the party’s inaction is the biggest cause of external whistleblowing. The results of this study have significant implications for our understanding of the impact of organisational cultures and accountability on the behaviour of politicians.
We consider the response of a flexibly mounted square prism placed in inertial-viscoelastic fluid flow with one degree-of-freedom in the cross-flow direction. Under these flow conditions, both inertia and elastic effects are significant. We model the system numerically using a two-way coupling scheme to simulate the interaction between the fluid and the spring–mass system at a Reynolds number of $\textit{Re}=200$ for two mass ratios of $m^* = 2$ and 20, and a Weissenberg number of $\textit{Wi}=2$, across a range of reduced velocities. We demonstrate that introducing fluid elasticity suppresses vortex-induced vibrations of square prisms, consistent with prior findings for circular bluff bodies. However, we find that fluid elasticity amplifies the galloping response in comparison with the response in a Newtonian fluid, leading to larger oscillation amplitudes and the onset of galloping at lower reduced velocities. The predicted enhancement in galloping is significant, particularly at low mass ratios, where no galloping is observed over the wide reduced velocity range tested for Newtonian fluids. We show that this enhancement of galloping is likely the result of the observation that the addition of viscoelasticity increases the magnitude of the rate of change of the transverse flow-induced force on the prism with increasing angle of attack of the incoming flow.
No one disputes the fact that the current environmental crisis requires a response. The subject of this paper is a relatively novel response that is gaining increasing traction: the rights of nature (RoN) approach. Proponents of RoN claim that if we recognize that natural objects and ecosystems are not things with which we may do as we like, but in fact are subjects of rights that place limits on the scope of permissible actions, then we might have a shot at addressing the environmental crisis in a satisfactory manner. This paper sets out to assess this claim, concluding that RoN is (1) morally problematic (it either leads to endless rights conflicts (biocentrism), or it problematically subordinates individual organisms to the biological whole (ecocentrism), (2) conceptually flawed (because rivers, mountains, and ecosystems are not the sorts of things that can bear rights), and (3) inefficacious in practice (appeals to RoN have typically failed in court and the instilment of environmental virtue in us will require more than just good laws). Two alternative approaches are discussed that combined could secure fundamental rights for humans regarding the environment, cultivate the appropriate character traits in them, and protect nature in the process.
Understanding how human activities affect Antarctic ecosystems is essential for both environmental management and the interpretation of ecological change. This is particularly important in Antarctica’s ice-free areas, which contain most of the continent’s terrestrial biodiversity and host the majority of scientific infrastructure. While work has been done to understand short-term impacts of research stations and scientific activity, little is known about the persistence of these impacts on soil ecosystems. Here, we examine the long-term ecological legacy of historical research infrastructure in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, East Antarctica. We collected soil samples from sites of historical research facilities that have since been removed, extracted and identified soil invertebrates and conducted statistical and geospatial analyses to identify spatiotemporal trends and evaluate patterns of abundance relative to distance from disturbance centres and time since abandonment. Soils closer to former infrastructure consistently had lower nematode abundances than soils further away, indicating long-lasting impacts of human activities on soil ecosystems. We also found evidence of potential recovery in some nematode populations, which appears to depend on the type of disturbance and the surrounding environmental setting. At several sites, surface disturbance from historical infrastructure is no longer readily apparent but biological recovery remains incomplete, demonstrating that visual restoration of the landscape does not necessarily correspond to ecological recovery. Measuring the impacts of human activities in these areas is important because they may confound our ability to interpret the subtle but significant effects of climate change and ecosystem responses more generally. This is particularly pressing as research and tourism are expected to increase in these regions. We offer ecological explanations for these patterns and discuss their implications for environmental management and conservation in the McMurdo Dry Valleys and other ice-free areas of Antarctica.
Recent research indicates that neuropathological alterations may propagate via brain networks, as illustrated by network diffusion models (NDMs). The application of NDM to internet gaming disorder (IGD) has yet to be evaluated. This study was set to identify possible epicenters of neuroanatomical alterations using NDM in IGD.
Methods
Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were obtained from 288 IGD participants and 165 matched recreational game users. Gray matter volume (GMV) was computed through CAT12 and segmented according to the Brainnetome Atlas. NMD was utilized to simulate the propagation of pathology. We initiated diffusion from each location to pinpoint probable epicenters of GMV alterations in IGD and correlated eigenmodes of the Laplacian matrix with observed atrophy and expansion patterns.
Results
Abnormal brain regions with altered GMV were observed in IGD. Specifically, IGD demonstrated a great loss in GMV in the caudal cuneus gyrus, precentral and postcentral gyrus, as well as the cingulate cortex while simultaneously exhibiting an increase in the amygdala. The pallidus and putamen showed positive correlations with gaming craving. Both the right cingulate gyrus and the left amygdala were identified by the model as significant epicenters of disease dissemination.
Conclusions
The results suggest that gray matter morphological abnormalities can predict temporal sequencing of pathology progression in IGD. Subcortical gray matter volume increases in reward-processing-related regions were positively correlated with gaming craving severity in IGD, consistent with altered reward processing and motivational drive in addiction models.
Recent scholarship has emphasised the central importance of cultural contact and global knowledge circulation for technological innovation; however, this connection remains understudied in the global early modern world. This introduction highlights the importance of combining migration history and the history of technology to shed new light on the roles of migrants in technological innovation from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century. The seven articles presented in this issue offer a range of studies spanning four continents, encompassing a wide range of migrants. Gathered together, they outline the multitude of factors that allowed migrants to become integral parts of technological dialogue. Hence, this introduction presents the methodological and conceptual foundations to unearth the common processes that linked the migration-innovation nexus across the early modern world.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) share substantial clinical and neuroanatomical features, yet the neurogenetic basis underlying their shared gray matter volume (GMV) deficits remains poorly understood.
Methods
We conducted meta-analyses to identify convergent GMV alterations across the two disorders. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were performed to uncover genetic variants associated with the shared GMV deficits region in UK Biobank participants. Polygenic risk score (PRS)-GMV associations were analyzed to examine the cumulative influence of genetic risk on GMV in regions with shared deficits. Furthermore, pleiotropic SNPs jointly associated with SCZ, BD, and shared GMV deficits were identified. Spatiotemporal gene expression profiling was utilized to characterize the developmental trajectories, and molecular docking was performed to explore potential drugs.
Results
Meta-analysis revealed consistent overlapping GMV reductions in frontal, temporal, and insular regions across SCZ and BD, based on 6,620 patients and 7,762 controls. GWAS identified 14 SNPs associated with the shared GMV deficits. PRS analyses showed that modestly higher SCZ polygenic risk correlated with decreased GMV of shared regions. Two pleiotropic SNPs – rs11191368 and rs79668541 – were linked to both disorders and the shared GMV deficits. Spatiotemporal expression analyses demonstrated distinct developmental trajectories, and molecular docking highlighted 168 drugs with binding interactions for shared genes.
Conclusions
This study delineates shared neurogenetic mechanisms linking GMV abnormalities to genetic risk across SCZ and BD. Given the cross-sectional design, future longitudinal studies in independent cohorts are warranted to validate these findings and clarify the temporal relationships.

Applying a rich model of individuals’ life-cycle utility maximization, I comprehensively evaluate retirement saving plans. Across a range of individual characteristics, access to basic plans with constant expected payouts and no or full annuitization leads to individual utility gains of up to 5.07% of initial wealth and lifetime income ($43,800 in present value terms), and almost all individuals prefer full annuitization and a target-date fund investment strategy. With flexible plans allowing for partial annuitization and non-constant expected payouts, utility gains go up to 5.81%, and most individuals prefer a high degree of annuitization and expected payouts being increasing through retirement.

Efforts to decolonize archaeology have gained significant momentum in the last few decades, but have yet to extend robustly to zooarchaeology. Zooarchaeology is, however, well positioned to make unique contributions to decolonial practice. Drawing on insights from Indigenous studies, animal studies, and models of Indigenous science, we argue that North American zooarchaeology must engage in decolonization if reconstructions of past human–animal relationships are to be robust and ethically grounded. We identify some of the colonial legacies embedded in zooarchaeology’s methods, classifications, and interpretive frameworks, and highlight how these structures constrain knowledge production. We offer a series of interventions and actionable recommendations—from analytical protocols to disciplinary practice—that create pathways for zooarchaeologists to participate in the wider decolonial project.
