Ferrodimolybdenite with ideal formula FeMo3+2S4 (C2/c, a = 11.8249(8) Å, b = 6.5534(3) Å, c = 13.0052(10) Å, β = 114.474(9)°, V = 917.27(12) Å3 and Z = 8) was discovered in a differentiated sulfide nodule composed of troilite and pentlandite parts. The nodule was detected in the central zone of a diopside–anorthite–tridymite oval paralava body, ∼30 metres in diameter, within the pyrometamorphic Hatrurim Complex in Daba-Siwaqa, Jordan. Ferrodimolybdenite is the first trivalent molybdenum compound discovered in Nature. Its synthetic analogue crystallises in the C1c1 space group. Ferrodimolybdenite with the empirical formula (Fe2+0.99Cu2+0.07Ni2+0.04)Σ1.10Mo3+1.94(S2–3.98P3–0.02)Σ4.00 was identified in the troilite part of the differentiated sulfide nodule. The nodule contains inclusions of tetrataenite, nickelphosphide, molybdenite, galena and rudashevskyite. Ferrodimolybdenite forms platy crystals with dimensions ranging from 3×100 μm to 20×40 μm. The mineral exhibits a grey colour and a dark grey streak. It is opaque with a metallic lustre, and its Mohs hardness is ∼3. The cleavage observed in the mineral is perfect on {001}, good on {100} and poor on {010}. Its tenacity is sectile, and its fracture is smooth. The calculated density of 5.445 g·cm–3 was derived from the empirical formula and unit cell volume refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. In reflected light, ferrodimolybdenite appears grey to light grey with a blueish tinge. It is anisotropic, with a reflectance in the range of 34–40%. The crystallisation of ferrodimolybdenite occurred in reduced conditions in monosulfide Fe(+Ni) melt at a temperature of 1000–1100°C and at low pressure.
Giant coronary artery aneurysms are rare but potentially fatal complications of Kawasaki disease. The lack of evidence-based recommendations on their management and treatment cause guidelines and practices to differ. We aimed to assess these variations.
Methods:
An anonymous online survey regarding surveillance, imaging, pharmacological management, and interventional practices was distributed among 134 physicians attending to Kawasaki disease patients worldwide. A p-value of <0.05 was deemed significant.
Results:
The majority (60%) of respondents were general paediatric cardiologists, and 29% interventional specialists. The average years in practice was 15 ± 9.6. Physicians from Asia had the most experience with giant coronary artery aneurysms. American practitioners preferred combining anticoagulants with aspirin. Beta-blockers and statins were more likely used in teenagers versus younger children. Cardiac catheterisation was most (52%) chosen for coronary surveillance in patients with echocardiogram anomalies, followed by Coronary CT-angiography. The indications for coronary intervention were split among respondents, regardless of geographic region or experience. The preferred treatment of coronary stenosis was percutaneous intervention (69%) versus bypass surgery. For thrombosis, thrombolytics (50%) were preferred over percutaneous (39%) and surgical (11%) interventions. Most (92%) preferred intervening in young children in a paediatric facility but were split between a paediatric and adult facility for older children. Most chose combined management by adult and paediatric specialists for either age-scenarios (70, 82%).
Conclusion:
As identified by our study, the lack of large studies and evidence-based recommendations cause uncertainty and ambivalence towards certain treatments. International collaborative efforts are needed to provide more robust evidence in the management of these patients.
Charisma, often seen as an innate trait, is now understood as leader signaling grounded in values, symbols, and emotions, suggesting it can be developed through interventions. However, the method for cultivating charisma remains unclear. This study examines nonverbal communication strategies, highlighting the potential of body language, facial expressions, and vocal modulation to enhance charisma. Additionally, we introduce a virtual reality training program focused on these cues and explore the role of audience presence in boosting the intervention’s effectiveness by fostering self-awareness and behavioral adjustments. Results of a controlled randomized experiment with virtual reality-trained participants and online charisma assessors demonstrated significant improvements in observer-rated charisma from pre- to post-training compared to the control group. Moreover, training in front of a virtual audience yielded the expected outcomes. This study sheds light on charisma theory, its potential virtual reality training application, and its implications for leadership development.
Anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery is a congenital coronary artery anomaly comprising 0.5% of all CHDs. Stenosis in the left coronary artery implanted in the sinus valsalva is one of the complications of surgical repair.
Management of coronary stenosis after surgery is very critical and difficult, especially in newborns and infants. Transcatheter procedures can be lifesaving. Herein, the coronary stenting procedure applied to a 3-month-old patient with post-surgical coronary stenosis is presented.
Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby (2024) has called for bioethics to end talk about personhood, asserting that such talk has the tendency to confuse and offend. It will be argued that this has only limited application for (largely) private settings. However, in other settings, theorizing about personhood leaves a gap in which there is the risk that the offending concept will get uptake elsewhere, and so the problem Blumenthal-Barby nominates may not be completely avoided. In response to this risk, an argument is presented in support of the idea that the role of philosophers and bioethicists, far from ending talk of personhood, ought to be to clarify the concept, and to do so in nuanced ways, given its application for specific kinds of impairments. The case of dementia is used to illustrate this in the context of person-centered care. Ironically, given the stigma attached to dementia, far from the need to end talk of personhood, bioethicists are needed to rescue the concept and clarify its role.
We generalize Hrushovski’s group configuration theorem to the case where the type of the configuration is generically stable, without assuming tameness of the ambient theory. The properties of generically stable types, which we recall in the second section, enable us to adapt the proof known in the stable context.
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) poses significant health concerns for women and their offspring, with implications that extend beyond pregnancy. While GDM often resolves postpartum, a diagnosis of GDM confers a greater risk of future type 2 diabetes (T2D) and other chronic illnesses. Furthermore, the intergenerational impact of GDM predisposes offspring to increased chronic disease risk. Despite the awareness of the short- and long-term consequences of GDM, translating this knowledge into prevention strategies remains challenging. Challenges arise from a lack of clarity among health professionals regarding roles and responsibilities in chronic disease prevention and women’s lack of awareness of the magnitude of associated health risks. These challenges are compounded by changes in the circumstances of new mothers as they adjust to balance the demands of infant and family care with their own needs. Insights into behaviour change strategies, coupled with advances in technology and digital healthcare delivery options, have presented new opportunities for diabetes prevention among women with a history of GDM. Additionally, there is growing recognition of the benefits of adopting an implementation science approach to intervention delivery, which seeks to enhance the effectiveness and scalability of interventions. Effective prevention of T2D following GDM requires a comprehensive person-centred approach that leverages technology, targeted interventions and implementation science methodologies to address the complex needs of this population. Through a multifaceted approach, it is possible to improve the long-term health outcomes of women with prior GDM.
The cyst nematodes, subfamily Heteroderinae, are plant pathogens of worldwide economic significance. A new cyst nematode of the genus Cactodera within the Heteroderinae, Cactodera xinanensis n. sp., was isolated from rhizospheres of crops in the Guizhou and Sichuan provinces of southwest China. The new species was characterized by having the cyst with a length/width = 1.3 ± 0.1 (1.1–1.6), a fenestral diameter of 28.1 ± 4.3 (21.3–38.7) μm, vulval denticles present; second-stage juvenile with stylet 21.5 ± 0.5 (20.3–22.6) μm long, tail 59.4 ± 2.0 (55.9–63.8) μm long and hyaline region 28.7 ± 2.7 (25.0–36.3) μm long, lateral field with four incisures; the eggshell with punctations. The new species can be differentiated from other species of Cactodera by a longer tail and hyaline region of second-stage juveniles. Phylogenetic relationships within populations and species of Cactodera are given based on the analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS-rRNA), the large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal RNA (28S-rRNA) D2-D3 region and the partial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences here. The ITS-rRNA, 28S-rRNA and COI gene sequences clearly differentiated Cactodera xinanensis n. sp. from other species of Cactodera. A key and a morphological identification characteristic table for the species of Cactodera are included in the study.
Emerging evidence has shown a strong correlation between serum TAG levels, the inflammatory response and Parkinson’s disease (PD) onset. However, the causal relationship between TAG levels and PD has not been well established. We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum TAG levels and risk of PD and explore the potential mediating role of circulating immune cells and inflammatory proteins. We utilised genotype data from the GeneRISK cohort, and summary data from genome-wide association studies investigating PD, circulating immune cells, inflammatory proteins and plasma lipidomes. Using Mendelian randomisation (MR) and multivariate MR (MVMR) analysis, we further adjusted for phosphatidylcholine (17:0_18:1) and TAG (58:7). Our results suggested a robust causal link between higher serum TAG (51:4) levels and a decreased risk of PD, with 1 sd genetically instrumented higher serum TAG (51:4) level leading to a 21 per cent (95 % CI 0·66, 0·96) reduction in the risk of PD (P= 0·015). Additionally, the results of the mediation analysis suggested a possible role for mediation through circulating immune cells (including IgD-CD38-B cells and resting CD4 regulatory T cells), but not circulating inflammatory proteins, in the causal relationship between the plasma lipidomes and PD. Our study confirms a causal relationship between higher serum TAG (51:4) levels and a lower risk of PD and clarifies a possible role for mediation through circulating immune cells, but not inflammatory proteins. These findings indicate that serum TAG (51:4) regulates immunity to effectively lower the risk of PD.
In the soil environment, divalent heavy metal ions often interact with trivalent metal ions to form hydrotalcite supergroup nanominerals (also known as natural layered double hydroxides, LDHs), effectively immobilising heavy metals within the minerals structure. Concurrently, these LDH minerals also show high surface reactivity and can adsorb surrounding heavy metal ions, thus they play a significant role in heavy metal pollution purification. However, the impact of the subsequent geochemical evolution of heavy-metal-containing LDHs on the migration and transformation of structural and surface-adsorbed heavy metals as well as its surface reactivity towards surrounding heavy metals remains unclear. Herein, Ni(II)Fe(III)-LDH and Co(II)Al(III)-LDH were taken as examples to reveal the influence of redox evolution on the immobilisation of structural and adsorbed heavy metals. The results of this work indicate that the oxidative–reductive alternating evolution of structural Ni, Fe and Co elements constrain the transformation of heavy metals, as well as their bioavailability greatly. The oxidative–reductive alternating evolution helped reduce the content of bioavailable heavy metals in exchangeable and carbonate-bounded states. It can also enhance the integration of heavy metals with the LDH structure and help transform heavy metals into residual states, thereby reducing their mobility and bioavailability. However, oxidative–reductive evolution significantly reduced the surface reactivity of LDHs, diminishing their interface locking ability for surrounding heavy metal ions. This research provides foundational data for assessing the long-term environmental performance of LDHs.
Firms are calling their employees back to the office because of concerns about employee productivity, collaboration, and trust. Thus, knowledge about the psychosocial aspects of virtual work environments is now more essential than ever. This study compared the relationships between mutual cognitive trust and employee performance in virtual and face-to-face leader–member dyads. Numerous studies have adopted a unidirectional approach to leader–member trust, exhibiting difficulties related to common method bias. The validity of previous research results comparing trust in face-to-face and virtual leader–member dyads can also be questioned because of other methodological drawbacks. We examined mutual trust and employee performance using different raters. We utilised the multigroup exploratory approach to simultaneously analyse face-to-face and virtual dyads formed by 180 leaders and 561 employees working at a multilatina company. Our results reveal the existence of differences between virtual and face-to-face leader–member dyads vis-à-vis mutual cognitive trust and employee performance relationship.
Three new species of Gyrodactylus were identified from the body surface of the Triplophysa species from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Gyrodactylus triplorienchili n. sp. on Triplophysa orientalis in northern Tibet, G. yellochili n. sp. on T. sellaefer and T. scleroptera and G. triplsellachili n. sp. on T. sellaefer and T. robusta in Lanzhou Reach of the Yellow River. The three newly identified species share the nemachili group species’ characteristic of having inturning hamulus roots. Gyrodactylus triplorienchili n. sp. shared a quadrate sickle heel and a thin marginal hook sickle, two morphological traits that set them apart from G. yellochili n. sp. However, they may be identified by the distinct shapes of the sickle base and marginal hook sickle point. Gyrodactylus triplsellachili n. sp. had much larger opisthaptoral hard part size than the other two species. The three new species show relatively low interspecific differences of 2.9–5.3% p-distance for ITS1-5.85-ITS2 rDNA sequences. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the three new species formed a well-supported monophyletic group (bp = 99) with the other nemachili group species.
Of all the principles in classical Jewish law that stand out from a comparative legal perspective perhaps none is more notable than the ban on self-incrimination in criminal procedures. Contrary to the most basic evidentiary assumptions of other ancient legal systems, this principle differs fundamentally from the right to remain silent that is part of both early modern and modern legal systems. Only rabbinic jurisprudence incorporates an outright exclusion of criminal confessions. Despite receiving much scholarly attention over the centuries, this principle’s fundamental justification relating to the rule of law and the public pursuit of justice has gone unnoticed. This article explores this salient jurisprudential perspective, and sheds new light on this principle by contrasting the Jewish legal approach with the primary modes of criminal adjudication that were adopted in the West. What emerges from this comparative analysis is that this seemingly anomalous principle actually reveals much about the core commitments and values of Jewish law. These, in turn, have substantial implications for certain contemporary legal practices and dilemmas.
Ascaridoidea (Nematoda) is a widespread superfamily of nematodes that comprises gastrointestinal parasites from all major groups of vertebrates. Although this taxon probably emerged in the Carboniferous, its Brazilian fossil record includes mostly eggs, found in ancient remains, collected in paleontological and archeological sites from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic Eras. The Tremembé Formation (Oligocene of the Taubaté Basin) has become an important source for paleoparasitological studies in avian coprolites during the third decade of the 21st century, with reports of eggs only at only a single cell stage, of embryonic development. Here we present the first egg of Ascaridoidea preserved containing morula, from a bird coprolite recovered from the shales of the Tremembé Formation. Three coprolites, from the outcrop of Aligra Comércio de Argila S/A, Taubaté municipality (State of São Paulo), were rehydrated and subjected to spontaneous sedimentation. Based on morphological and morphometric features and diet and zoopaleontological context, the trace fossils were assigned to piscivorous birds. The egg found showed morphological characteristics typical of Ascaridoidea: namely spherical form, ornamented, and somewhat thick shell. Moreover, this superfamily includes several taxa that infect piscivorous birds and fish in heteroxenous life cycles and produce eggs with similar features as the egg found in the present study. The paleoparasitological information associated with the paleofaunistic diversity of birds and fish from the Tremembé Formation, reveal that the ancient Brazilian paleoenvironments provided subsidies for the rise and success of nematodes infecting these animals during the Paleogene.
This article seeks to contribute to the growing scholarship on object-focused Roman histories by expanding the conversation to previously overlooked archaeological finds from Roman Palestine. This case study focuses on “Northern Collar-Neck Lamps,” which have been found throughout Roman Galilee and date to the first two centuries CE. I argue that their distinctive high collar, perhaps designed to reduce spillage, also served as an affordance that invited additional modes of interaction, namely placing a supplemental reservoir for oil – such as a pierced eggshell – over the filling hole. Once set up, this would allow for a slow drip of oil to prolong illumination time without human intervention. This usage is suggested from chronologically and geographically proximate sources, namely early rabbinic literature: Hebrew and Aramaic writings from the first centuries that reference physical details and uses of hundreds of objects and could prove helpful for future material histories of the Roman era.
This article examines the business strategies employed by early twentieth-century Bombay mill owners in work organization and wage differentiation. The traditionally highly segmented and fluctuating domestic textile markets in India were further complicated by colonial free trade policies, making them highly competitive. This prompted Bombay mills to adopt various strategies, including maintaining a flexible workforce, product diversification, tailoring sales strategies to the Indian market, and increasing labour inputs, related to their heavy reliance on short-stapled Indian raw cotton. Using detailed and disaggregated data reported by textile mills in Bombay during the 1920s and 1930s, this article investigates how employers adopted these strategies in tandem with distinct wage-setting systems as management tools to depress the wage bill. By analysing the motivations behind the adoption of or resistance to these tools across different operations within the production process – such as weaving, spinning, reeling, and winding – the article reveals how gendered and social-class stratifications shaped these strategies and led to wage disparities across the industry. Ultimately, these labour-intensive strategies, conditioned by the broader colonial context in which India's textile industry developed, were at the root of the lower productivity of Indian workers, with long-run adverse consequences for India's general industrial development.
This study explores precession-driven flows in a non-axisymmetric ellipsoid spinning around its medium axis. Using an experimental approach, we focus on two aspects of the flow: the base flow of uniform vorticity and the development of fluid instabilities. In contrast to a preceding paper (J. Fluid. Mech., vol. 932, 2022, A24), where the ellipsoid rotated around its shortest axis, we do not observe bi-stability or hysteresis of the base flow, but a continuous transition from small to large differential rotation and tilt of the fluid rotation axis. We then use the model developed by Noir & Cébron (J. Fluid. Mech., vol. 737, 2013, pp. 412–439) to numerically determine regions in the parameter space of axial and equatorial deformations for which bi-stability may exist. Concerning fluid instabilities, we use three independent observations to track the onset of both boundary layer and parametric instabilities. Our results clearly show the presence of a parametric instability, yet the exact nature of the underlying mechanism (conical shear layer instability, shear instability and elliptical instability) is not unambiguously identified. A coexisting boundary layer instability, although unlikely, cannot be ruled out based on our experimental data. To make further progress on this topic, a new generation of experiments at significantly lower Ekman numbers (ratio of rotation and viscous time scales) is clearly needed.
Business courts can function as loci of privilege, both institutional and substantive, expressing a clear privileging of business as a sphere of social action. Using an original case study, we show how the establishment of a new business court privileged businesspersons in two ways: by providing them with expert judicial services and by receiving into law a rule that gives them unique protection from liability—the Delaware Business Judgment Rule. We did not find that this reception reflected court capture by businesspersons. It did reflect a conviction that Delaware law is best, inculcated by US-educated academics, and inter-jurisdictional competitive aspirations. Our case study demonstrates how business courts express the structured power of business and businesspersons.
