Linguistic differences in staged or scripted performances matter, since language, or language-ing, is a critical component in structuring power and maintaining unequal social differences or challenging and complicating them. To investigate such scripted speech in the context of Indigenous characters, we draw on the semiotic processes of erasure and rhematisation as well as the newly proposed concepts of erasure marking and semiotic overlay. We examine a dataset of Australian television series with Indigenous characters that feature significant creative involvement by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals. Crucially, these series address mainstream, mixed audiences, meaning they must blend multiple perspectives to reach diverse viewers. We explore overt meta-discourses and subtle signs of linguistic characterisation to show how Indigenous screen creatives counter or challenge erasure and rhematisation by diversifying and complicating characters’ linguistic repertoires and bringing in Indigenous discourses and perspectives. We consider De Finetti’s control problem for absolutely continuous strategies with control rates bounded by a concave function and prove that a generalized mean-reverting strategy is optimal in a Brownian model. In order to solve this problem, we need to deal with a nonlinear Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process. Despite the level of generality of the bound imposed on the rate, an explicit expression for the value function is obtained up to the evaluation of two functions. This optimal control problem has, as special cases, those solved in Jeanblanc-Picqué and Shiryaev (1995) and Renaud and Simard (2021) when the control rate is bounded by a constant and a linear function, respectively.
We employ a linear stability analysis and direct numerical simulations to study the characteristics of wall modes in thermal convection in a rectangular box under strong and inclined magnetic fields. The walls of the convection cell are electrically insulated. The stability analysis assumes periodicity in the spanwise direction perpendicular to the plane of a homogeneous magnetic field. Our study shows that for a fixed vertical magnetic field, the imposition of horizontal magnetic fields results in an increase of the critical Rayleigh number along with a decrease in the wavelength of the wall modes. The wall modes become tilted along the direction of the resulting magnetic fields and therefore extend further into the bulk as the horizontal magnetic field is increased. Once the modes localized on the opposite walls interact, the critical Rayleigh number decreases again and eventually drops below the value for onset with a purely vertical field. We find that for sufficiently strong horizontal magnetic fields, the steady wall modes occupy the entire bulk and therefore convection is no longer restricted to the sidewalls. The aforementioned results are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the nonlinear evolution of magnetoconvection. The direct numerical simulation results also reveal that at least for large values of horizontal magnetic field, the wall-mode structures and the resulting heat transfer are dependent on the initial conditions.
The 1965 Immigration Act represented a radical shift in U.S. policy, which has been credited with dramatically expanding the volume and changing the composition of immigration. Its passing has often been described as the result of political machinations negotiated within Congress without regard to public opinion. We show that congressional voting was consistent with public opinion on abolishing the country-of-origin quotas but not with the desire to limit the volume of immigration. While the former initially reflected attitudes toward civil rights, the latter is consistent with contemporary expectations that the expansion in numbers would be modest.
Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, is an impediment to the livestock industry’s expansion and has a massively negative socio-economic impact due to its widespread prevalence in livestock. It is a waterborne zoonosis affecting human populations in the countries where rural economies are associated with livestock rearing. Conventional diagnosis of Fasciola infection is done by detecting parasite eggs in the faeces of infected animals or by immunological methods. Accurate and quick immunodiagnosis of Fasciola infection in animals and humans is based on the detection of antibodies and specific antigens expressed in the prepatent stage of the parasite. Both molecular and serodiagnostic tests developed thus far have enhanced the reliability of Fasciola diagnosis in both man and animals but are not widely available in resource-poor nations. A pen-side diagnostic test based on a lateral flow assay or a DNA test like loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) would be simple, fast, and cost-effective, enabling clinicians to treat animals in a targeted manner and avoid the development of drug resistance to the limited flukicides. This review focuses on the recent advances made in the diagnosis of this parasite infection in animals and humans.
The Jurassic trigoniid bivalves of Gebel Maghara, northern Sinai, Egypt are described and figured. They belong to 14 species, nine genera, and two families. The identified taxa occur in rocks ranging in age from the Toarcian (Lower Jurassic) to the lower Kimmeridgian (Upper Jurassic). Five genera and one species are new: Magharitrigonia asymmetrica new genus new species; Cotswoldella aff. C. hemisphaerica (Lycett, 1853); Cornbrashella pullus (J. de C. Sowerby, 1826); Parorthotrigonia lepidomorpha (Abdallah and Fahmy, 1969); and Retetrigonia imbricata (J. de C. Sowerby, 1826). Five species, Trigonia reticulata Agassiz, 1840, T. cf. T. castor d'Orbigny, 1849, Promyophorella tuberculata (Agassiz, 1840), Orthotrigonia exortiva (Kitchin, 1903), and O. gracilis (Kitchin, 1903) are recorded from the Jurassic rocks of Gebel Maghara for the first time.
Several jurisdictions across the globe have introduced legislation to legally permit the sale and consumption of recreational cannabis. This editorial considers current evidence from the rest of the world and asks how this might inform the possible consequences of ‘legalisation’ models in the UK.
The emergence of digital platforms has been viewed in scholarly narratives as a “technological fix” of global capital, to use Beverly Silver's classic term. That is, capital continues to devise innovative strategies to restructure the labour process and avoid employer legal liabilities. This study reveals an important but somewhat overlooked “financial fix” aspect of the platform economy. Through a case study of a Chinese food delivery platform, the author shows that global speculative capital and its cash-burning games have generated a form of market-value fetishism in this sector. In response, platform companies have devised innovative labour acquisition strategies to expand their market share that have profoundly shaped the work and employment dynamics within the sector. In particular, the platform companies engaged in a subsidy rivalry with their competitors in order to attract crowdsourcing/gig workers for their regular services and at the same time established a highly structured subcontracting system to secure a more reliable and committed workforce to target the relatively high-end consumer market. The author argues that the interaction between global financialization and local capital's strategic choices accounts for the peculiar structure and employment dynamics in the Chinese platform economy.
This article questions the drivers behind the distribution of savings in different capital markets in Portugal between 1550 and 1800. A novel dataset of credit transactions, interest rates and debt service documents a shift in the lenders' investment behaviour. By 1712, one of the leading institutional creditors—the Misericórdias—had ceased to allocate funds to the sovereign debt market. Data reveal that this disinvestment was neither related to the poor performance of debt service nor to the lure of potentially higher returns on private credit. We argue that changes in the rationales for issuing debt justify the drop in the number of institutional investors in the public credit market, and this correlates with the heavy allocation of funds into private lending.
Thirty-one individuals buried at Salango, a Machalilla phase fishing village, constitute the only significant Middle Formative funerary assemblage so far recovered for the coast of Ecuador. Our description and discussion of the burials in the context of the nature, location, and history of the settlement and a comparison with preceding coastal Valdivia and contemporary highland Cotocollao funerary practices show that, although they represent a new general tradition, Machalilla burial rituals at Salango reflected specific social conditions and concern with community identity. In particular, the elaborate burial of an adult female not only points to the continuing authority of women in coastal Ecuadorian Formative communities but also expresses the spiritual and economic importance of the sea for Machalilla phase Salango.
Essays on Partial Derangement of the Mind in Supposed Connection with Religion, written amidst the illness of its author almost two centuries ago, was the little-known work of a distinguished physician. Seeking to rebut the argument that religion is causative of ‘derangement of the mind’ it takes a surprisingly biological view of such conditions while, at the same time, affirming the importance of faith, hope and love in human well-being. Despite its limitations, it makes observations that remain relevant to debates about religion and psychiatry today.
Fossils are rare in Cambrian strata of the Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah, and are important because they can help integrate our understanding of laterally adjacent but discontiguous rock units, e. g., the Tintic Quartzite of Utah and the Lodore Formation of Utah-Colorado. New body fossils from strata previously mapped as Tintic or Cambrian Undifferentiated, but here interpreted as the Ophir Formation, include indeterminate hyoliths and hyolithids, brachiopods including a linguloid, and the trilobites Trachycheilus Resser, 1945 and Elrathiella Poulsen, 1927. The last two assign these strata to the Ehmaniella Biozone (uppermost Wuliuan Stage; Miaolingian Series) or traditional Laurentian middle Cambrian. These data, together with fossil occurrences elsewhere in Utah, require that the Tintic Quartzite was deposited prior to and/or during the early Wuliuan, and suggest that the unit could be correlative to much of the Lodore Formation of Utah and Colorado.
