It is now generally believed that elderly may have slightly higher dietary protein requirements than those of the young-middle-aged adults. We have previously conducted related studies by the indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) technique, but more research data are needed to revise the protein requirements of the elderly. The main objective was to reevaluate the dietary protein requirements of healthy Chinese adults (65–80 years) without sarcopenia by using the IAAO technique. Nine healthy adult men and seven healthy adult women participated in the study, with protein intakes ranging from 0·1 to 1·8 g/(kg·d). Diets that delivered energy at a 1·5 resting energy expenditure were isocaloric. The amounts of phenylalanine and tyrosine needed to remain constant for each protein dosage. By applying a nonlinear mixed-effects model analysis on the F13CO2 data, which revealed a breakpoint in F13CO2 in response to graded protein intakes, the mean protein requirement was calculated. The mean estimated average requirement (EAR) for healthy elderly Chinese adults without sarcopenia was determined to be 0·94 g/(kg·d). The protein recommended nutrient intake (RNI) determined using various derivation approaches ranged from 1·13 to 1·36 g/(kg·d). The EAR for Chinese adults without sarcopenia aged 65–80 years in this study is 6·8 % higher than the current recommended EAR (0·88 g/(kg·d)). The RNI derived using various derivation approaches are all greater than the current RNI (0·98 g/(kg·d)). This trial was registered with the Chinese clinical trial registry as ChiCTR2200061382.
Using real-time data, we show that currency excess return predictability is in part due to mispricing. First, the risk-adjusted profitability of systematic trading strategies decreases after dissemination of the underlying academic research, suggesting that market participants learn about mispricing from publications. Moreover, the decline is greater for strategies with larger in-sample profits and lower arbitrage costs. Second, the effect of comprehensive risk adjustments on trading profits is limited, and signal ranks and alphas decay quickly. The finding that analysts’ forecasts are inconsistent with currency predictors implies that investors’ trading contributes to mispricing and suggests biased expectations as a possible explanation.
The Pertosa Caves, today also known as the Pertosa-Auletta Caves, constitute an important karst system in the Campania region (southern Italy). Crossed by the waters of a river that re-emerges on the surface, they have an overall development of about 3 km. Thanks to the width of the entrance, the excellent location along a natural communication route through the mountains and the natural availability of water directly on the site, the initial part of the cavity was frequented by humans, without interruption, from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. During the protohistory, in particular, the moment of most marked human presence is recorded in the cave. In this phase an extensive pile dwelling system was built on the waters of the underground river. The system was probably created to make the location, subject to frequent flooding, suitable for human settlement. This structure today constitutes an archaeological unicum not only in Italy but throughout Europe. We briefly analyze its general characteristics providing the results of a radiocarbon dating campaign which allowed to assess the occupation phases of the different contexts and the life span of the wooden artifacts, which came to us in a very good state of preservation. Radiocarbon data allowed to assess the chronological range of the human frequentation of the caves and to date the exceptionally well preserved underground pile dwelling system.
This article introduces an innovative approach to antenna array design, focusing on synthesizing the optimal radiation pattern for fifth-generation (5G) communication. The authors have designed a reliable linear and elliptical antenna array (EEA) of dipole elements by employing sailfish optimization (SFO). 5G technology promises transformative improvements in wireless communication with high data rates, expanded capacity, minimal latency, and exceptional service quality. The crux of 5G lies in the precision of antenna array design, aiming for an emission pattern with minimal side lobe levels (SLLs) and a narrow half-power beam width (HPBW). A narrower HPBW is essential for efficient long-range communication, whereas reducing the SLLs enhances signal clarity. The SFO optimizes the current excitation of each antenna element for reducing the mutual coupling effects and lowering the SLL and HPBW values in linear and EEAs. This paper uses the exact excitation to each element to show the linear antenna arrays (LAA) (10-, 16-element) design examples and EAA (8-, 12-, 20-element) structures. The LAA and EAA design examples obtained with the SFO algorithm establish the advancement in SLL suppression over the uniform antenna array and the methods proclaimed in the recent article.
The blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) include many species that are important as nuisance flies, disease transmitters, and pollinators and are also very important in forensic entomology. Understanding the presence, phenology, and abundance of species in a given area is important in analysing a forensic case and is also valuable in developing baseline databases for comparison over time. Little work on Calliphoridae has been conducted in Manitoba, Canada. Baited traps were deployed at eight sites around the Winnipeg area throughout the insect season in 1978, 1979, and 1980. Five species, Cynomya cadaverina (Robineau-Desvoidy), Protophormia terraenovae (Robineau-Desvoidy), Phormia regina (Meigen), Lucilia illustris (Meigen), and L. sericata (Meigen), were regularly collected, with Calliphora spp. Robineau-Desvoidy collected much less frequently. The same species were collected consistently over the years of trapping, although abundance varied greatly even at the same sites.
We study equilibrium states for a class of non-uniformly expanding skew products, and show how a family of fiberwise transfer operators can be used to define the conditional measures along fibers of the product. We prove that the pushforward of the equilibrium state onto the base of the product is itself an equilibrium state for a Hölder potential defined via these fiberwise transfer operators.
We conducted a post hoc analysis of an antibiotic stewardship intervention implemented across our health system’s urgent-care network to determine whether there was a differential impact among patient groups. Respiratory urgent-care antibiotic prescribing decreased for all racial, ethnic, and preferred language groups, but disparities in antibiotic prescribing persisted.
Many Afro-Palearctic songbird migrants have declined, with conservation efforts mainly focused on the restoration of breeding habitat. However, pressures outside the breeding season might play a role. This includes the possibility that local relict populations no longer maintain the original phenotypic variation in migration patterns, with a loss of flexibility. The Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus kept stable population levels in central and eastern Europe, but was almost extinct in the western part of the breeding range. In the Rhine delta the population declined from 10,000 individuals around 1950, to fewer than 100 at present. Here we document migratory timing, routes, and destinations of members of this remnant songbird population. It turned out that the remaining adults still showed high diversity in migratory phenotypes. This is even true in each of the two last tiny subpopulations in the Netherlands (of 50 and 15 pairs). So, even very small populations maintain the possible adaptive phenotypic variation, and with hindsight this justifies the breeding habitat restoration efforts currently underway.
We consider orthogonally invariant probability measures on $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n(\mathbb {R})$ and compare the mean of the logs of the moduli of eigenvalues of the matrices with the Lyapunov exponents of random matrix products independently drawn with respect to the measure. We give a lower bound for the former in terms of the latter. The results are motivated by Dedieu and Shub [On random and mean exponents for unitarily invariant probability measures on $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n(\mathbb {C})$. Astérisque287 (2003), xvii, 1–18]. A novel feature of our treatment is the use of the theory of spherical polynomials in the proof of our main result.
Using data from the Veterans’ Health Administration from 2010 to 2019, we examined the distribution and prevalence of community-acquired phenotypic extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) E. coli in the United States. ESBL prevalence slowly increased during the study period, and cluster analysis showed clustering in both urban and rural locations.
Chylothorax following paediatric cardiac surgery is associated with significant morbidity, particularly those that are refractory to conservative therapy. It is our impression that there is important variability in the medical, surgical, and interventional therapies used to manage refractory chylothorax between congenital heart programmes. We therefore conducted a survey study of current practices for managing refractory chylothorax.
Methods:
The Chylothorax Work Group, formed with the support of the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium, designed this multi-centre survey study with a focus on the timing and indication for utilising known therapies for refractory chylothorax. The survey was sent to one chylothorax expert from each Work Group centre, and results were summarised and reported as the frequency of given responses.
Results:
Of the 20 centres invited to participate, 17 (85%) submitted complete responses. Octreotide (13/17, 76%) and sildenafil (8/17, 47%) were the most utilised medications. Presently, 9 (53%) centres perform pleurodesis, 15 (88%) perform surgical thoracic duct ligation, 8 (47%) perform percutaneous lymphatic interventions, 6 (35%) utilise thoracic duct decompression procedures, and 3 (18%) perform pleuroperitoneal shunts. Diagnostic lymphatic imaging is performed prior to surgical thoracic duct ligation in only 7 of the 15 (47%) centres that perform the procedure. Respondents identified barriers to referring and transporting patients to centres with expertise in lymphatic interventions.
Conclusions:
There is variability in the treatment of refractory post-operative chylothorax across a large group of academic heart centres. Few surveyed heart centres have replaced surgical thoracic duct ligation or pleurodesis with image-guided selective lymphatic interventions.
