Poor social function in people with psychosis has been linked to impairments in social cognition and neurocognition, which in turn have been identified as promising treatment targets. We developed a novel social cognitive intervention, Understanding Social Situations (USS), that minimizes cognitive load by leveraging delivery methods common to cognitive rehabilitation. USS focuses on making good judgments about what others may be feeling and thinking, and how they might respond in various social scenarios. In the current trial, we evaluated the efficacy of USS versus an active control.
Methods:
103 Veterans with psychotic spectrum disorders were randomized to two months of USS training or a problem-solving training matched for nonspecific treatment factors. Comprehensive assessments included clinician-aided self-report social functioning, social skills performance, and pre/post/follow-up ecological momentary assessments about the extent and quality of social interactions.
Results:
Participants in USS had significant within but not between group improvements on a clinician-aided self-report measure of social function. Social skills performance did not change for either condition. Momentary assessments revealed no change in frequency of social contacts, but those in the USS condition showed within-group improvements on comfort level during current social interactions and anticipated positive appraisals of future interactions. Those randomized to problem-solving training had significantly greater improvements in depression at post-training.
Conclusions:
More rigorous trials are needed evaluating the impact of social cognitive interventions on real-world social functioning. It may be particularly important to link interventions to lived social experience and to assess the quality of social interactions.
Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid that recently emerged as a legal alternative to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Due to emerging concerns regarding its neuropsychiatric safety profile, including psychosis, it was banned in July 2025. We report two cases of HHC-induced psychosis in adolescents requiring inpatient psychiatric admission, both with no prior psychiatric history. Both individuals required about six weeks of inpatient treatment, with their symptoms resolving following abstinence from HHC and antipsychotic medications. These cases support recent regulatory measures banning HHC and highlight the need for ongoing clinician awareness of this agent and its associated risk of psychosis.
A new species Acutigebia succinacia from the Pacific coast of Honshu and Kyushu, Japan, is described and compared with A. simsoni (Thomson, 1893). The new species differs from A. simsoni in having a spine on the lower margin of antennal article 1, whereas A. simsoni is unarmed. The genetic divergence of partial 16S rRNA gene sequence (491 bp) between A. succinacia sp. nov. and A. simsoni is 6.34–6.60%. A key to the seven species of Acutigebia is presented.
Canine angiostrongylosis is a life-threatening disease caused by infection with the metastrongyloid nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum. As animal travel and translocation have increased in recent times, many infectious agents, including A. vasorum, have expanded to new geographic areas. Here we report the first molecularly confirmed case of angiostrongylosis in a translocated dog in Estonia. We also analyse the phylogenetic relationship of the isolate with previously described European isolates and describe the challenges encountered in diagnosing this disease. Given the expanding geographic distribution of A. vasorum across Europe, our findings underscore the need for improved diagnostic awareness to control the parasite’s transmission.
We develop and analyse a model for a flat microbial droplet growing on the surface of a three-dimensional viscous fluid. The model describes growth-induced stresses at the fluid surface, density variations in the bulk due to nutrient consumption and the resulting fluid flows that arise. We reformulate this free-boundary problem as a system of integro-differential equations defined solely on the microbial domain. From this formulation, we identify an axisymmetric solution corresponding to a radially expanding disk and analyse its morphological stability. We find that growth forces stabilise the axisymmetric solution, while buoyancy forces destabilise it. We connect these findings to experimental observations.
W. E. B. Du Bois theorized that the way Black Americans understand the racial world and their place within it shapes their connections to national identity differently from those of White Americans. This article juxtaposes Du Bois’s theory of racialized subjectivity with Identity Theory’s constructs of prominence and change to examine differences in attachment to American nationhood during a turbulent period of American politics: the Trumpism era. Using data from three waves of the American National Election Studies (2012, 2016, 2020), this study examines the extent to which White and Black Americans viewed their national identities as important before, during, and after Trump’s first presidential administration. I employ “racial identity prominence” as a nuanced measure of race to illustrate a phenomenological element of American national identity that differentially shapes attachment. The findings reveal that the Trumpism period catalyzed significant identity change between 2012 and 2020. Moreover, the degree to which White and Black Americans connected to their national identity across the three election years largely depended on the subjective importance they assigned to their racial identity—that is, their racial identity prominence. The White American archetype was reinforced, as Whites with strong attachment to their racial identity also expressed strong national identity. Interestingly, Black Americans also expressed strong ties to their national identity during this period, particularly those with a strong racial identity. Still, the question of how White and Black Americans envision the country and their place in it remains complex.
This paper reviews a purposive sample of doctoral dissertations in second-language education, completed between 2019 and 2023 at universities in Germany. Among the 79 relevant dissertations found from this period, 18 thematic strands were identified, of which 7 were chosen as being particularly relevant for a more in-depth review: (1) evaluation of specific teaching approaches, (2) (partial) language skills, (3) individual variables, (4) special learner groups, (5) multilingualism pedagogies, (6) digital media, and (7) literature and film pedagogy. We identify relevant topics and relate these to trends in research methodology (qualitative/quantitative/mixed methods). We also discuss the depth and breadth of these dissertations and situate their scholarly contributions within German and international research on additional language education. A comparison with the three previous review articles reveals methodological developments and thematic shifts, highlighting both progress and persistent challenges in German-language doctoral research across nearly two decades of scholarship.
