Learning outcomes
After studying this chapter, you should be able to:
• understand the reasons why it is important to incorporate technology into the teaching and learning of mathematics
• articulate your strengths and areas of development in terms of the TPACK model
• be able to choose the appropriate technology for the teaching and learning of mathematics and have a range of strategies to implement the technologies
• find and adapt resources from the internet and know how to use them in class and online.
Introduction
There are a number of terms that are used when describing the use of technology in mathematics education. Information Communication Technology (ICT), Learning Technology (LT), Digital Technology (DT), Information Technology (IT), Educational Technology and e-learning are some of the more common ones. Often these terms are used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this chapter technology will be used to describe digital devices such as calculators, laptops, tablets, interactive whiteboards, online communications such as email, social media and blended learning; in essence, all forms of technology that can be used in mathematics education.
This chapter will look at the use of technology in a general sense. Research into the general use of technology in mathematics education will be used to mount a case for the use of technology. The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework (Koehler & Mishra, 2009) that identifies the knowledge teachers need to teach effectively with technology will be outlined and will give you one way of looking at your readiness to implement technology into your teaching. This will be followed by an overview of the key technologies used in mathematics education, and a brief discussion of how technology is being used for teacher professional learning.
One of the features of the use of technology in teaching and learning is that it is constantly evolving and so this chapter will look at ways of using technology rather than specific devices. As such it is important for you as a pre-service teacher to be aware of the current technological tools, learn how to use them and explore their use in mathematics education. It is not possible in a single chapter to give detailed instructions on how to use a variety of devices and so the focus will be on how to use selected devices with particular functionality in a variety of ways for teaching.
