In recent years study abroad has emerged as an important context in which the acquisition of second languages takes place. Language learners invest large sums of money to study the language in the country in which it is spoken. For university students, this often involves delaying their college graduation and living overseas for the first time in their lives. Universities and other language schools compete to set up the most innovative and enticing study abroad programs, which now often include the learning of other subject areas and skills (politics, management, fashion, art, winemaking, etc.) alongside state-of-the-art language programs.
