For the bioassessment of tropical marine ecosystem, a survey of protozoa colonizing artificial substrate was conducted in the coastal waters of northern Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. Protozoan samples were collected using glass slides from 1 and 2 m water depths at time intervals of 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28 days during winter and monsoon seasons. Thus, the colonization processes of protozoa were assigned into three stages namely the initial (3 days), transitional (7 days), and equilibrium stages (10–28 days) at two depths in two seasons. Regression analyses demonstrated that the colonization dynamics of protozoa were well fitted to the MacArthur-Wilson model and logistic equation. Species richness reached equilibrium after 10–14 days and species abundance was maximum at a depth of 1 m. These results suggest that samples of protozoa can be collected at 1 m depth in winter season for monitoring the ecological health of tropical marine ecosystems.

This study uses two large datasets to explore the output dynamics following economic disasters, one including 180 economic disasters across 38 countries over the last two centuries and the other including 204 disasters in 182 countries since World War II. Our results suggest that extreme economic crises are associated with huge and remarkably persistent loss. On average, output loss surges to above 26% in the first few years after the outbreak of a disaster and remains above 20% for as long as 20 years. It is only after more than 50 years that the loss is fully recovered.

Hospitals caring for patients with high-consequence pathogens may need to safely manage large volumes of category A waste. Using biological indicators to assess for successful sterilization, autoclave cycle parameters that would inactivate 4 categories of waste were identified and validated utilizing a STERIS Amsco 630LS Steam Sterilizer.

In this paper, we prove some weighted sharp inequalities of Trudinger–Moser type. The weights considered here have a logarithmic growth. These inequalities are completely new and are established in some new Sobolev spaces where the norm is a mixture of the norm of the gradient in two different Lebesgue spaces. This fact allowed us to prove a very interesting result of sharpness for the case of doubly exponential growth at infinity. Some improvements of these inequalities for the weakly convergent sequences are also proved using a version of the Concentration-Compactness principle of P.L. Lions. Taking profit of these inequalities, we treat in the last part of this work some elliptic quasilinear equation involving the weighted $(N,q)-$Laplacian operator where $1 < q < N$ and a nonlinearities enjoying a new type of exponential growth condition at infinity.

The rise of climate change on the global political agenda coincided with the growth of partisan polarization in US politics and, in many ways, their trajectories mirror one another. When the climate crisis first began to attract political attention 30 years ago, Republicans and Democrats responded with similar levels of interest and concern. Today, partisan division overwhelms all other aspects of climate-change politics and environmental politics more broadly (Egan, Konisky, and Mullin 2022; Egan and Mullin 2017).

The application and provision of prehospital care in disasters and mass-casualty incident response in Europe is currently being explored for opportunities to improve practice. The objective of this translational science study was to align common principles of approach and action and to identify how technology can assist and enhance response. To achieve this objective, the application of a modified Delphi methodology study based on statements derived from key findings of a scoping review was undertaken. This resulted in 18 triage, eight life support and damage control interventions, and 23 process consensus statements. These findings will be utilized in the development of evidence-based prehospital mass-casualty incident response tools and guidelines.

Given two unital C*-algebras equipped with states and a positive operator in the enveloping von Neumann algebra of their minimal tensor product, we define three parameters that measure the capacity of the operator to align with a coupling of the two given states. Further, we establish a duality formula that shows the equality of two of the parameters for operators in the minimal tensor product of the relevant C*-algebras. In the context of abelian C*-algebras, our parameters are related to quantitative versions of Arveson's null set theorem and to dualities considered in the theory of optimal transport. On the other hand, restricting to matrix algebras we recover and generalize quantum versions of Strassen's theorem. We show that in the latter case our parameters can detect maximal entanglement and separability.

The well-understood gap between “mainstream” environmental organizations and Americans from minority populations is rooted in two phenomena. First, in the mid-1990s, hostility expressed toward immigrants and immigration by the Sierra Club (among other groups) drove a wedge between environmentalism and Latinos, as 87% of all Latinos are within two generations of the immigration experience. Second, whereas larger environmental groups focused on pollution and other forms of environmental degradation as well as conservation of natural and wild spaces, minority Americans showed less engagement in these issues and were affected more directly by air and water pollution and its consequences—phenomena that more directly affect communities of color. “Environmental justice” movements and organizations emerged to fill the gap left by the somewhat diminished focus of large “mainstream” groups on minority populations.

Edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent quadrilaterals are completely classified in a series of three papers. This second one applies the powerful tool of trigonometric Diophantine equations to classify the case of $a^3b$-quadrilaterals with all angles being rational degrees. There are $12$ sporadic and $3$ infinite sequences of quadrilaterals admitting the two-layer earth map tilings together with their modifications, and $3$ sporadic quadrilaterals admitting $4$ exceptional tilings. Among them only three quadrilaterals are convex. New interesting non-edge-to-edge triangular tilings are obtained as a byproduct.

Decimeter-scale, elongate, fossil fronds from the Ediacara Range in South Australia were formally described as Rangea longa Glaessner and Wade, 1966, but the disparate nature of documented specimens has hindered their inclusion in global syntheses and has resulted in these fossils being assigned to at least five different genera in two different clades since their discovery. Detailed study of the type material from the Ediacara Range and the few specimens subsequently collected elsewhere in the Flinders Ranges reaffirms that these specimens represent a single species, with the apparent morphological variation between specimens entirely taphonomic and reflecting the obverse and reverse surfaces of these fronds coupled with the orientation of the frond axis and petaloids at different angles relative to the sea bottom on which they were preserved. The preserved architecture of these fronds constitutes three orders of branching microstructure that are strictly orthogonal to immediately higher and lower orders. This implies affinities with the arboreomorphs, but representing a new frond genus herein named Akrophyllas. Akrophyllas n. gen. differs from all other Ediacaran fronds in exhibiting a stalk that is visible only on one side of the frond and is internal to the other side where the first-order branches instead meet at a zigzag axial trace. Akrophyllas n. gen. was attached to a bulbous holdfast on the sea bottom, and evidence for current scours that formed in the lee of the fronds and for a strong current alignment of felled fronds with depositional overlap of adjacent fronds imply an upright, epibenthic lifestyle for Akrophyllas longa new combination.

This study aimed to quantify a latent variable for body size (BS) in pigs by using five linear body measurements including body length (BL), body height (BH), chest width (CW), chest girth (CG) and tube girth (TG), and also to identify the most associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and related genes with BS by using the genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) based genome-wide association study (GWAS) or GBLUP-GWAS methodology. To perform a GWAS on the BS latent trait, we used a mixed linear model and identified a total of 53 significant SNPs. Additionally, we found that nine genes, including Rho GTPase activating protein 12 (ARHGAP12), transmembrane protein 108 (TMEM108), T-cell lymphoma invasion and metastasis inducing factor 1 (TIAM1), ras homologue gene family member B (RHOB), POU class 4 homeobox 1 (POU4F1), follistatin-related protein 4 (FSTL4), cellular communication network factor 2 (CCN2), beaded filament structural protein 2 (BFSP2) and attractin-like protein 1 (ATRNL1) were associated with the BS trait in pigs. These genes are involved in several biological processes, including the regulation of anatomical structure, morphogenesis, the regulation of cell size and growth. The results suggest that the identified SNP and related genes may play important roles in regulating the growth and development of pigs. The results imply that these genes could be promising candidates for further exploration of the underlying mechanisms of body size variation. Furthermore, the findings have significant practical implications for enhancing the efficiency and profitability of pig farming through genetic selection.

A long-term project to map and catalog all precontact Native American burial mounds in Iowa provides information about the number, location, form, survivorship, and rate of loss of mounds. This analysis reveals previously undocumented mound manifestations, including a large cluster of 200 linear mounds along the central Des Moines River valley. Historical records reveal that at least 7,762 mounds were identified at 1,551 sites in Iowa between 1840 and the present. About 47% of the mounds from these sites can be possibly seen in lidar, with 33% of the total clearly seen in lidar. Data show that mound loss over time is linear. Extrapolation of data suggests that at least 15,000–17,000 mounds stood in Iowa in the nineteenth century, but the actual number was likely higher.

This paper presents the results of an excavation that uncovered c. 390 m of roadside plots within the ribbon development alongside the Fosse Way on the south-west periphery of the walled small town of Margidunum in Nottinghamshire. The roadside plots appear to have been used for a combination of domestic occupation and agricultural activity, and to the rear lay 54 inhumation burials in 52 graves (including two double burials) and a single urned cremation burial, whose skeletons bore evidence for the tough working lives of the individuals. These are interpreted as the remains of peasant farmers and as evidence for the agricultural focus of the settlement, and of ‘small towns’ more generally. A contrast is drawn between the apparent poverty of this community and the apparently more high-status occupation within the defended core of the town.

Dogs are considered omnivores based on their evolution consuming diets including animal tissue. Few feeding trials evaluating the nutritional suitability of exclusively plant-based (vegan) diets in dogs have been published, and the efficacy of vitamin D2 in maintaining canine serum vitamin D levels has not been clearly determined. A blinded dietary trial included sixty-one healthy desexed adult dogs: thirty-one fed an experimental extruded vegan diet (PLANT) and thirty fed a commercial extruded meat-based diet (MEAT) for 3 months. Dogs were screened via veterinary examination and routine laboratory analyses prior to enrolment, at baseline and exit timepoints. Body composition was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and blood was collected for vitamin D profiling. All dogs maintained health parameters, body weight and composition throughout the study. Dogs maintained on PLANT demonstrated a significant reduction in platelet count, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and cholesterol, though values remained within normal reference ranges. Dogs fed PLANT also demonstrated a shift from vitamin D3 to vitamin D2 metabolites, though total vitamin D analogue levels were unchanged, with the exception of 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. Bone mineral content and density did not differ from baseline values. Health status was maintained in dogs fed PLANT and vitamin D2 appeared efficacious in maintaining serum total vitamin D concentrations and bone mineralisation. Findings support the hypothesis that PLANT was comparable to MEAT for maintenance of healthy adult dogs for at least 3 months and identified areas where further research is warranted to elucidate the potential risks and benefits of plant-based (vegan) diets.

We investigate almost minimal actions of abelian groups and their crossed products. As an application, given multiplicatively independent integers p and q, we show that Furstenberg’s $\times p,\times q$ conjecture holds if and only if the canonical trace is the only faithful extreme tracial state on the $C^*$-algebra of the group $\mathbb {Z}[\frac {1}{pq}]\rtimes \mathbb {Z}^2$. We also compute the primitive ideal space and K-theory of $C^*(\mathbb {Z}[\frac {1}{pq}]\rtimes \mathbb {Z}^2)$.
