We investigate whether election results are associated with emotional reactions among voters across democracies and under what conditions these responses are more intense. Building on recent work in comparative politics, we theorize that emotional intensity is stronger after elections involving populist candidates and highly polarized parties. We test these expectations with a big-data analysis of emotional reactions on parties’ Facebook posts during 29 presidential elections in 26 democracies. The results show that ideological polarization of political parties might intensify emotional reactions, but there is no clear relationship with the presence of populist candidates.
The production and circulation of common wares during the late antique period in North Africa has been largely overlooked by past scholarship, despite their potential to shed light on late antique production, workshop organisation and regional ceramic economies. This paper provides the first detailed study of a distinctive type of late antique, wheelmade common ware, the so-called African ‘painted ware’ (APW). It first presents a critical overview of the distribution of painted wares and their typology, decoration and chronology based on existing publications. It then develops a typology of vessel shapes, but also decoration patterns based on a large, well-preserved assemblage of painted ceramics recently excavated by the DAI, INP and UCL at the archaeological sites of Bulla Regia and Chimtou in the Medjerda valley, Tunisia. To understand the composition, technology and provenance of the wares, petrographic and chemical analysis was conducted on 57 painted sherds from the two sites. The results suggest the existence of a production centre in the Medjerda Valley, with potters using local calcareous clay tempered with sand, while the decoration was obtained using iron-based pigments. Comparison with published painted wares at other sites contributes to an initial insight into regional distribution patterns of the painted ware.
Water hyacinth is an invasive aquatic plant that has been associated with major negative economic and ecological impacts in water systems worldwide, including Rwanda, since its establishment in the country in the 1960s. While biological control is considered the most sustainable management method, the success of biocontrol agents depends on various abiotic factors, with temperature being critical. This study assessed the suitability of potential water hyacinth biocontrol agents such as: Neochetina weevils, Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), and Cornops aquaticum Bruner (Orthoptera: Acrididae) for regions with a temperate climate by testing their thermal boundaries. Using thermal physiology limits and CLIMEX modelling, we found that Neochetina eichhorniae Warner and N. bruchi Hustache (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) had lower thermal minimums (CTmin) of 2.4°C and 2.6°C, respectively, compared to Megamelus scutellaris (4.7°C) and Cornops aquaticum (6.2°C). CLIMEX modelling predicted the suitability of Neochetina weevils and C. aquaticum across Rwanda, while M. scutellaris appeared unsuitable for the colder northern regions of the country but appropriate for the central and eastern regions. These findings suggests that the historical failure of Neochetina weevils introduced to Rwandan water bodies in 2000 was not due to temperature extremes. Rather, other factors such as release numbers or water quality may have played a role. This study provides crucial information for future biocontrol efforts in Rwanda and similar temperate regions, highlighting the importance of pre-release thermal tolerance assessments and climate modelling to predict biocontrol agent establishment and efficacy.

Does democratic satisfaction drive voter turnout, or does voting increase satisfaction with democracy? This paper explores the satisfaction-participation nexus in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), where democratic dissatisfaction is prominent. It tests preregistered hypotheses using a five-wave panel survey from the Czech 2023 presidential election and a pooled dataset from five CEE countries. Unlike previous studies from Western Europe, it finds evidence for both mechanisms: pre-election satisfaction correlates with participation, but, simultaneously, voters experience a stronger election-related increase in satisfaction than abstainers. Further analyses reveal that the strong increases in satisfaction are driven by election winners and begin already during the election campaign. Our findings highlight the specificities of the satisfaction-participation link and elections’ legitimizing effects in newer democracies.
Dietary patterns enriched in fermentable fibre (such as inulin) and inorganic nitrate are linked to cardiovascular benefits, possibly mediated by gut microbiota-derived bioactive compounds including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and nitric oxide (NO). However, the potential synergistic effects remain unclear. We conducted a randomised, double-blind, crossover study to investigate the acute effects of inulin (15 g; INU), nitrate (400 mg; NO3−), and their combination (INU + NO3−) on plasma nitrate and nitrite levels, SCFAs, and blood pressure (BP) in 20 adults. Plasma nitrate and nitrite were significantly elevated following INU + NO3− and NO3− compared to INU (p < 0.001). Plasma SCFAs were increased after INU + NO3− and INU, but the incremental AUC was not statistically significant, likely due to large inter-individual variability. No significant main effects were observed on BP; however, inverse correlations were identified between peak plasma nitrite and diastolic BP (rs = −0.61, p = 0.004) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) (rs = −0.59, p = 0.005) following INU + NO3−. Peak nitrate concentrations were inversely correlated with diastolic BP following NO3− (rs = −0.47, p = 0.004). Co-supplementation with inulin and nitrate did not enhance plasma nitrate/nitrite or BP beyond nitrate alone but modulated SCFA profiles, suggesting potential interactions between fibre fermentation and nitrate metabolism for cardiovascular health.
This study presents an innovative framework to improve the accessibility and usability of collaborative robot programming. Building on previous research that evaluated the feasibility of using a domain-specific language based on behaviour-driven development, this paper addresses the limitations of earlier work by integrating additional features like a drag-and-drop Blockly web interface. The system enables end users to define and execute robot actions with minimal technical knowledge, making it more adaptable and intuitive. Additionally, a gesture-recognition module facilitates multimodal interaction, allowing users to control robots through natural gestures. The system was evaluated through a user study involving participants with varying levels of professional experience and little to no programming background. Results indicate significant improvements in user satisfaction, with the system usability scale overall score increasing from 7.50 to 8.67 out of a maximum of 10 and integration ratings rising from 4.42 to 4.58 out of 5. Participants completed tasks using a manageable number of blocks (5 to 8) and reported low frustration levels (mean: 8.75 out of 100) alongside moderate mental demand (mean: 38.33 out of 100). These findings demonstrate the tool’s effectiveness in reducing cognitive load, enhancing user engagement and supporting intuitive, efficient programming of collaborative robots for industrial applications.
Trade policy in Chile has always enjoyed a high degree of consensus among the various social actors. The low level of debate in the media and civil society has always been highlighted, especially with regard to the strategy of signing preferential trade agreements (PTAs), except for some sectoral debates. However, this low level of politicization has been reversed since the social outbursts of 2019, when this questioning was installed. The CPTPP has generated a broad debate among different actors. To determine the extent to which perceptions of PTAs have actually changed, the chapter develops a mixed qualitative methodology based on stakeholder surveys, expert interviews, and media analysis. We try to find out why Chile appears to have turned its back on PTAs, given the potential economic benefits they have brought to the country. The first section reviews the literature on perceptions, particularly in relation to trade agreements. The second section describes the evolution of Chile’s trade policy in order to understand the key moments when turning points in general perceptions have occurred. The third section presents and discusses the results of the surveys, media analysis, and interviews.
In this article, we take the charitable activities of the Shaolin Temple as a case study for our analysis of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) management of religion under Xi Jinping. Our fieldwork and in-depth interviews reveal that the Shaolin Temple has, through its charitable work, assumed the attributes of a “cultural broker” for the CCP. And because the temple has an abundance of symbolic capital and is respected by the public, it presents the CCP with a “dictator’s dilemma.” On the one hand, the CCP allocated resources to the temple’s orphanage so that it could assist the regime with its poverty alleviation efforts; on the other hand, there is a danger that the temple may gain sufficient ideological and discursive power to threaten the CCP’s rule. So, for political security reasons, the Party bureaucracy endeavours to maintain tight control over the orphanage.
The engineering-to-order (ETO) sector, driven by the demands of new energy transition markets, is witnessing rapid innovation, especially in the design of complex systems of turbomachinery components. ETO involves tailoring products to meet specific customer requirements, often posing coordination challenges in integrating engineering and production. Meeting customer demands for short lead times without imposing high price premiums is a key industry challenge. This article explores the application of artificial neural networks as an enabler for design automation to deliver a first tentative optimal design solution in a short period of time with respect to more computationally demanding optimization methods. The research, conducted in collaboration with an energy company operating in the Oil & Gas and energy transition markets, focuses on the design process of reciprocating compressors as a means of study to develop and validate the developed methodology. Three case studies corresponding to as many representative jobs related to reciprocating compressor cylinders have been analyzed. The results indicate that the proposed method performs well within its training boundaries, delivering optimal solutions and providing reasonably accurate predictions for target configurations beyond these boundaries. However, in cases requiring a creative redesign using artificial neural networks may lead to errors that exceed acceptable tolerance levels. In any case, this methodology can significantly assist design engineers in the efficient design of complex systems of components, resulting in reduced operating and lead times.
Traditional regression models typically estimate parameters for a factor F by designating one level as a reference (intercept) and calculating slopes for other levels of F. While this approach often aligns with our research question(s), it limits direct comparisons between all pairs of levels within F and requires additional procedures for generating these comparisons. Moreover, Frequentist methods often rely on corrections (e.g., Bonferroni or Tukey), which can reduce statistical power and inflate uncertainty by mechanically widening confidence intervals. This paper demonstrates how Bayesian hierarchical models provide a robust framework for parameter estimation in the context of multiple comparisons. By leveraging entire posterior distributions, these models produce estimates for all pairwise comparisons without requiring post hoc adjustments. The hierarchical structure, combined with the use of priors, naturally incorporates shrinkage, pulling extreme estimates toward the overall mean. This regularization improves the stability and reliability of estimates, particularly in the presence of sparse or noisy data, and leads to more conservative comparisons. Bayesian models also offer a flexible framework for addressing heteroscedasticity by directly modeling variance structures and incorporating them into the posterior distribution. The result is a coherent approach to exploring differences between levels of F, where parameter estimates reflect the full uncertainty of the data.
Chapter 7 surveys the various Balkanisms that emerge from a consideration of the syntax of the Balkan languages. Particular attention is given to the ordering of elements in phrases and sentences, the syntax of clitics and the “little words” that play such a key role in Balkan syntax, and various types of sentence-combining, especially subordination (complementation) and coordination, but parataxis as well. Three key aspects of Balkan syntax—the loss of the infinitive and its replacement by finite verbs, impersonal constructions, and the narrative use of imperatives—are discussed at length.

Despite experiencing particularly severe and potentially irreversible climate change impacts, Peru has not yet developed explicit national policies on loss and damage. This chapter draws on the analysis of government policy and legislative documents, as well as twelve semi-structured interviews with key public and civil society actors, and identifies two key factors which contribute to limiting Peru’s engagement with loss and damage at the national level: national identity and policymaking politics. With respect to the former, the chapter argues that the issue of loss and damage is perceived as inconsistent with Peru’s identity and status as an upper middle-income country. National actors tend to frame loss and damage as “money for the poor” and thus something concerning Small Island Developing States and least developed countries, and there is also a fear that, as a middle-income nation, Peru might potentially be liable for claims against the nation state for the impacts of climate change. Moreover, Peru’s extractivist development and economic model limits the discussion and uptake of bold climate-related policies. With respect to (party) politics, the chapter finds that loss and damage is seen as highly contentious in Peru’s policymaking process and that it lacks the necessary support from civil society organizations.
Legume lectins represent a broad class of environmental toxicants that bind to cell surface glycoproteins. Raw red kidney beans (RRKB), a widely consumed common source of dietary protein, are rich in the lectin phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Consumption of improperly cooked (which may require overnight presoaking and boiling at least at 100°C for 45 min) red kidney beans causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Since the relationship between lectin toxicity and the cellular chaperone machinery remains unknown, the study aimed to determine the effects of heat-denatured PHA on epithelial barrier function and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expression and its function as a molecular chaperone in PHA-treated Caco-2 cells and animals. Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomised to an ad libitum diet of either standard rat chow or chow containing 26% crude red kidney beans. We measured HSP70 and heat shock factor 1 gene expressions in the small intestine and HSP70 protein expression in Caco-2 cells. In Caco-2 cells, luciferase activity was measured to investigate protein folding. Fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled lectin was used to study its intracellular uptake by Caco-2 cells. PHA lectin reduced transepithelial electrical resistance in Caco-2 cells. FITC-labelled PHA entered Caco-2 cells within 3 h of treatment. PHA treatment significantly reduced HSP70 levels and luciferase activity in Caco-2 cells, which was prevented by HSP70 overexpression. In rats fed RRKB chow consisting of legume lectins, we found reduced levels of HSP70 and heat shock factor 1. These observations suggest that lectins counter the protective function of HSP70 on intestinal barrier function.
A two-component Looijenga pair is a rational smooth projective surface with an anticanonical divisor consisting of two transversally intersecting curves. We establish an all-genus correspondence between the logarithmic Gromov–Witten theory of a two-component Looijenga pair and open Gromov–Witten theory of a toric Calabi–Yau threefold geometrically engineered from the surface geometry. This settles a conjecture of Bousseau, Brini and van Garrel in the case of two boundary components. We also explain how the correspondence implies BPS integrality for the logarithmic invariants and provides a new means for computing them via the topological vertex method.
Researchers’ racial and gender identities influence their outcomes in academia and the field of political science. This letter interrogates how researcher identity affects the research process: specifically elite interview recruitment. Within an ongoing research project we embed a pre-registered audit experiment randomizing the gender of the researcher conducting outreach to estimate whether there are differences in interviews scheduled holding all other confounders constant. We find that when outreach is conducted by a woman, elites are more likely to schedule an interview. This letter contributes to our understanding of bias and inequality during the research process. In addition, our study offers a new approach to audit experiments that limits deception and wasted time for elites.
The impact of trade agreements is not gender neutral, as women and men play different roles and enjoy different opportunities in society, markets and the economy. In order to minimize the unintended discriminatory impact of these agreements on women, several countries have developed policy instruments with gender-related commitments. However, the nature and scope of these commitments vary considerably from one region to another. Moreover, while some countries have been at the forefront of including these provisions in their trade agreements, many others have lagged behind and have yet to take the first step in this direction. This chapter examines these dynamics. The first part of the chapter looks at the differences in gender-related provisions in different regions, using practical examples to illustrate differences and overlaps within these regions. The second part of the chapter zooms in on one of these regions, South America, as it has emerged as a frontrunner in drafting trade agreements with various types of gender commitments. This section offers reflections on the ways in which countries in South America have drafted gender provisions, the roles of women that these provisions have focused on, and the mainstreaming strategies that are unique to this region (such as the inclusion of stand-alone chapters and the creation of dedicated implementation mechanisms).
