A consistent three-equation shallow-flow model is derived for Herschel–Bulkley fluids propagating down an inclined plane. A rigorous asymptotic method is used to incorporate the complex rheological properties of the material into the model. Difficulties arise from the coexistence inside the flow of a sheared layer, in which the material is largely above the yielding threshold, and a pseudoplug layer, in which the material is just on the verge of yielding. The derivation of the model is based on two steps. First, the flow variables are expanded up to the first order of accuracy in terms of flow aspect ratio, in both the sheared and the pseudoplug layers. A specific generalization of the tensorial constitutive law is proposed, allowing us to implement a regular perturbation method in the entire domain. Second, the mass, momentum and energy balance equations are formally averaged over the flow depth. This results in three coupled equations for the fluid depth, the average velocity and a third variable, the enstrophy, related to the internal shearing of the flow. The final model has the structure of a fully hyperbolic system with relaxation source terms, and is adapted to represent dry fronts and material stoppage. A linear stability analysis is performed, showing a stabilizing effect of plasticity in good agreement with experimental results. A simple well-balanced numerical scheme is proposed, and various flow configurations are simulated, including roll waves and dam-break problems. The relative influences of plasticity, shear-thinning and shearing in the pseudoplug are investigated.
The text explores ‘Black Box Music,’ an artistic research experiment investigating human–technology relations in musical improvisation. The authors describe performances in which each musician plays an unfamiliar, complex, custom-built instrument designed by another team member. These ‘black box’ devices – ranging from AI-based systems to assemblages of analogue devices – cannot be fully understood or controlled, thus foregrounding questions of agency, sense-making, and aesthetic experience. Drawing on Actor-Network Theory, phenomenology, and philosophies of technology, the authors show how performers, instruments, and audience form a dynamic network of actants whose roles and intentions remain ambiguous. Players initially struggle to ‘read’ the instruments’ behaviour, shifting from reactive analysis toward proactive improvisation. This process blurs embodiment and alterity: the instruments alternately function as transparent extensions of the body and as quasi-autonomous others. Such ambiguity invites anthropomorphisation and even ritualised interaction, echoing historical entanglements of music, magic, and spirituality. Audience members, too, encounter indeterminate agency and must negotiate aesthetic meaning without clear attribution of sound to human or machine. The project demonstrates how complexity and unpredictability destabilise traditional notions of control, revealing improvisation as collective, participatory sense-making and highlighting the emergent, co-creative agency of both humans and technological instruments.
The poignant Epilogue, titled “1991,” depicts the dissolution of Yugoslavia as a functional federal state and the violence at the start of the interrepublic war. With the collapse of the political state, all artistic activities in Yugoslavia, and especially Serbia, once a major attraction for experimental musicians and artists from East and West, came to a complete halt. With the brutality of the war, the ensuing mass exodus (brain drain) of artists, students, and harsh economic sanctions imposed against Serbia, the once-fertile Yugoslav avant-garde music scene never managed to recapture its artistic and experimental glory days of the Cold War era.
Automation anxiety is reshaping British game development at a moment when generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is being positioned as both creative catalyst and labour-displacing threat. Grounded in anthropology and in dialogue with social theory and memory studies, we examine how developers experience ‘life on the edge of time’ in a sector tasked with future-making amid intersecting constraints and expectations. Through ethnographic vignettes, we contend that anxiety operates as a temporal orientation, one that is fundamentally polytemporal: a condition that folds together industry memories of past technological surges, intensifies present pressures, and animates competing projections of what comes next. We show how automation anxiety exceeds individual experience to function as a collective, industry-wide condition, revealing how industry memory operates as both repetition and interpretive resource in moments of technological upheaval. By situating automation anxiety at the intersection of media rhetoric, collective memory, and technological innovation, this article advances a sociocultural account of anxiety as a polytemporal orientation capable of both constraining and catalysing possible futures.
Despite common associations with plague pits and mass graves, many individuals who succumbed to the Black Death in the mid-fourteenth century AD, and to the numerous subsequent outbreaks of plague, were buried in parish cemeteries. This limits the usefulness of contemporaneous cemetery assemblages for the establishment of comparative, non-catastrophic (or ‘attritional’) demographic profiles for medieval populations in Britain. Drawing from three earlier cemeteries, this study reveals similarities in age-at-death and survivorship profiles for adults, offering a characteristic pre-Black Death profile that helps reinforce the distinctiveness of the over-representation of individuals aged 15–24 years among plague burials.
The importance of copyright law is generally not reflected in media law and policy. Recent legislative initiatives, such as the European Media Freedom Act, have failed to address the chilling effects of restrictive copyright rules on media activities. New forms and platforms for digital journalism and the increasing role of artificial intelligence require adaptation of the legal framework. A holistic legal approach is needed to address threats to values such as freedom of expression and of the press. The role of the media as ‘public watchdog’ creates constitutional imperatives, derived from European human rights instruments, to enable them to use subject matter protected by copyright. This chapter argues that the emerging theory of digital constitutionalism can help to develop a common framework for media and copyright law. It identifies copyright limitations and exceptions as the most appropriate mechanisms to enable this. The chapter proposes reforms of copyright exceptions to remove the chilling effects created by exclusive rights and to facilitate the media’s use of information in their role as democracy’s Fourth Estate. The chapter proposes further concretising of digital constitutionalism, placing media and copyright law within a broad regulatory framework for constitutionally protected values in the digital space.
This chapter describes how dependence on coffee and other primary commodities exacerbated foreign dependency, especially during fluctuations in global primary commodity prices. The chapter discusses the Rwandan Patriotic Front’s (RPF) origins, including the key paradigmatic ideological foundations of the party while discussing the civil war and the 1994 genocide. The chapter ends by outlining three periods of the evolution of political settlement under RPF rule. Between 1994 and 2000, RPF loyalists were rewarded, while there was increased concentration of power among Tutsi RPF members. In the 2000s, until the early 2010s, RPF leadership centralised control among a smaller clique within the RPF, with increasing elite fragmentation characterising this period. In the third phase after the early 2010s, there has been increased external reliance, and the visible threat of transnational coalitions, comprising RPF dissidents and disenchanted domestic elites, has emerged but been contained.
Regional-scale glacier mass-balance (MB) estimates are essential for understanding the impacts of climate change on alpine hydrology but remain challenging to obtain. Remotely sensed phenology metrics, such as the cumulative melting index (CMI) derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, are increasingly used for MB estimation; however, the strength of this relationship varies across glaciers. This study analyzes the relationship between the MODIS-derived CMI and glacier annual MB across 88 alpine glaciers globally and investigates sources of variability. By standardizing CMI values, we reduce interglacier variability in CMI–MB relationship. Principal component analysis (PCA) and Gaussian mixture model are employed to classify glaciers into six climate-based clusters. Cluster-specific linear regression models improve MB estimation accuracy. When glacier predictions from the cluster-specific models are combined across all 88 glaciers worldwide, the overall root-mean-square error is 511.0 mm w.e., compared with 571.4 mm w.e. using a single regression model. Applied to 616 glaciers in the European Alps, the model estimates a 20 year (2002–21) annual average mass loss of −981.9 ± 11 mm w.e. a−1. These findings highlight the potential of MODIS-derived phenology metrics for scalable glacier MB estimation and emphasize the influence of regional climatic controls on glacier sensitivity to climate variability.
This article analyzes variation in and metalinguistic commentary surrounding the primary stressed vowel of the place-name ‘Chicago’. Sociolinguistic interview data with fifty-six lifelong Chicagoans from two adjacent neighborhoods reveal both social variation and apparent time evolution in the phonetic manifestation and phonemic patterning of the CHICAGO vowel. Contrastive metalinguistic ideologies substantiate this variation, as different speakers map ‘authentic’ versus ‘inauthentic’ Chicagoness to opposite phonemic variants. While previous work on place-names proposed linkages between place identity and linguistic material that can articulate stances toward geographic areas, we document inverted semiotic mappings among residents who otherwise share the same positive orientation to their neighborhood. We draw upon locally constructed chronotopes to account for the inverse polarization characterizing the CHICAGO vowel. We ultimately argue for dynamic conceptions of place-based linguistic features that attend more closely to the ideologically productive nature of local identity. Faith-sensitive depression therapies address a core aspect of cultural values but are not specifically promoted within global mental health policy. This study evaluated a culturally adapted Behavioural Activation intervention for Muslim patients (BA-M) compared with standard treatments across diverse settings. A patient-level meta-analysis combined data from two randomised controlled trials and one feasibility trial, comparing BA-M with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and, in the UK, social interventions. The primary outcome was post-treatment depression severity (PHQ-9) and retention was analysed using Poisson regression alongside qualitative evaluation. A total of 266 participants were recruited (Turkey: 22; Pakistan: 103; UK: 141), with no baseline differences in depression severity between groups. BA-M produced significantly greater reductions in PHQ-9 scores, with an adjusted mean difference of −2.72 (95% CI: −3.93 to −1.51). Engagement was also higher in BA-M (IRR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.18–1.44). Qualitative findings (n = 66) indicated strong support among patients, therapists and service managers, highlighting increased patient motivation and engagement in both Muslim majority and minority contexts. Participants emphasised the importance of religious identity in recovery from depression. The faith-adapted therapy BA-M demonstrates superior effectiveness to CBT and social interventions, supporting the integration of faith-sensitive approaches into global mental health practice.
The Television Without Frontiers Directive, introduced in 1989, was the EU’s first regulatory instrument under the audiovisual media policy, aiming to facilitate the circulation of television services throughout the Union. Since then, the audiovisual landscape has evolved significantly, with technological advancements and market shifts prompting revisions of the directive. In 2007, the scope of the directive was expanded to include video-on-demand services (e.g. Netflix), transforming the directive into the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD). In the years that followed years, influencers – creators of user-generated content on video-sharing platforms such as YouTube and TikTok – became established sources of audiovisual entertainment, information, education, and commercial communication. Today, they are in effective competition with traditional television and video-on-demand platforms. The most recent revision of the AVMSD in 2018 acknowledged this by no longer automatically excluding user-generated videos from the directive‘s scope. Despite this update, the regulatory framework remains deeply rooted in the twentieth-century media ecosystem, which was characterised by spectrum scarcity and television broadcasters as gatekeepers. This leads to challenges in applying and interpreting the AVMSD, hindering its ability to effectively achieve its policy goals.
The wake of a model wind turbine exposed to incoming freestream turbulence (FST) with a variety of turbulent characteristics is studied through particle image velocimetry experiments. The FST cases were produced using different passive turbulence generating grids. The cases spanned turbulent intensities ($T_i$) in the range $1.3\,\% \lesssim T_i\lesssim 14\,\%$ and only considered short integral length scales $L_v \lesssim 0.2D$ (where $D$ is the turbine diameter). Increasing $T_i$ and $L_v$ in this range resulted in an earlier breakdown of the tip vortices which is shown to be associated with increased wake meandering amplitudes. For all the FST cases considered, the initiation of wake meandering was found to be related to a turbine instability that is excited by the nacelle’s shedding, even for the highest FST levels. The amplitudes of wake meandering were similar for all the cases in the near wake ($x\lt 2D$), but the amplitudes in the far wake ($x\gt 4D$) were discernibly higher for all the FST cases compared with the no grid case (lowest $T_i$), primarily due to the early break down of the tip vortices. Deeper insights into the origins, and subsequent evolution, of the various coherent motions (characterised by particular frequencies) in the presence of FST are obtained through analysis of the multiscale triple-decomposed coherent kinetic energy budgets. The wake meandering modes in the presence of FST are shown to better utilise the mean velocity shear, extracting more energy from the mean flow while other sources such as nonlinear triadic interactions and diffusion also become important.
