Printed media can shape its audience’s political preferences. Research on governments influencing their narrative focuses on censorship of political scandals but largely ignores day-to-day political content. We analyze opinion columns from Mexico, a country with a democratic culture where outright censorship is unfeasible, and yet there is journalistic evidence on the government “sponsoring” the media to communicate messages with a less negative tone. We estimate the negative tone of over 200,000 opinion pieces from Mexico’s eight most prominent newspapers using sentiment analysis. We propose a novel metric of media capture that conveys the over-favoring of publicity spending by the government in news outlets. We find that captured media are less negative about the incumbent president and more negative about their main political rival, suggesting media organizations adapt their content to their advertisers’ preferences. The results are validated by rare qualitative evidence that uncovers the blacklisting of media deemed too negative of the incumbent.
Mixing in fracture networks plays a central role in many environmental and geological processes, influencing contaminant dispersion, dilution and biogeochemical reactions. Despite this, fundamental aspects are not well understood, including how the network topology and large fracture aspect ratio governs the stretching, folding, cutting and rearrangement of fluid elements, which represent the advective components of mixing. In this study, we focus on three-dimensional (3-D) discrete fracture networks (DFNs) governed by steady isotropic Darcy flow. We develop a theoretical framework for advective mixing and uncover two distinct mixing mechanisms at different length scales – fracture mixing and intersection mixing – that arise due to streamline routing in fractures and intersections. We show that the large fracture aspect ratio enforces discontinuous mixing, involving cutting and shuffling (CS) of fluid elements due to streamline routing. Mixing is controlled by combined CS and fluctuating fluid deformation, forming a piecewise smooth (PWS) transform and weak ergodic mixing. An efficient graph-based representation of this process is developed via a mixing graph ${\mathcal{G}_M}$ that efficiently encodes the fracture network topology while capturing mixing dynamics. Numerical predictions of mixing from ${\mathcal{G}_M}$ agree to high precision with those from direct numerical simulations. This framework provides new insights into the processes which govern mixing in DFNs, and forms a rigorous basis for further application to fluid borne processes such as solute mixing and dispersion, colloidal transport and deposition, chemical reactions, and biological activity.
Two Tocharian B manuscripts, PK AS 3B and IOL Toch 306, contain an ingredient läksañña klautso, lit. “fish ear”, that, in earlier editions and translations, has been interpreted as “(fish) gill”. However, no concrete evidence has been brought forward to interpret “fish ears” in this context as “gills”, nor is there convincing evidence for the use of “gills” in (traditional) medicine for the dermatological and gastrointestinal conditions described in these manuscripts. By examining the term for “shell” in Nakh-Dagestanian languages (e.g. Avar ччугlигlин /č:uʕiʕin/, lit. “fish ear”) and highlighting metaphorical associations of related words, e.g. German Ohrmuschel “auricle”, we argue that läksañña klautso refers to shells and conches rather than gills. Additionally, we provide instances of the use of conches and shells in Āyurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine to support our claim. Accordingly, we suggest that “ground shell (powder)” is the ingredient listed in these two remedies.
This study examined stakeholder perceptions of gaps in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mitigation efforts across different sectors and career stages, with the goal of generating insights to support prioritization of One Health interventions.
Method:
We conducted a cross-sectional survey of AMR stakeholders using a structured questionnaire between October and November 2025. Stakeholders were recruited through international networks across 33 countries on 5 continents. Respondents listed the top three areas in AMR mitigation efforts that they perceived as receiving insufficient attention but require greater focus to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant bacterial infections. We performed thematic analysis, calculated weighted priority scores, conducted an Impact-Effort Matrix analysis, and applied Fisher’s exact tests to examine associations between themes, professional sector and career stages.
Results:
Among 103 respondents, participants spanned nine professional sectors and four career stages. Antimicrobial stewardship (18.8%, weighted score 119) and Environmental AMR and Waste (16.5%, weighted score 108) were the most frequently cited perceived gaps. Impact-Effort Matrix analysis identified four priority areas as Quick Wins (stewardship, IPC, surveillance, and animal health, accounting for 45.7% of impact), two Major Projects (environmental AMR, R&D), three Fill-ins (awareness, One Health, other/cross-cutting), and three Hard Slogs (access, financing, policy). No significant associations were observed between perceived mitigation gaps across professional sector and career stages.
Conclusions:
The emphasis on antimicrobial stewardship among stakeholders highlights a perceived disconnect between stewardship policy adoption and on-the-ground practice. The Impact-Effort Matrix provides a decision-support tool that may assist policymakers and funders in prioritizing One Health interventions.
A nuclear detonation will result in thousands of casualties who will need to be monitored for the occurrence of delayed complications from their exposure to radiation. The National Academies of Sciences have published a report on the key elements of the long-term health monitoring of populations after an improvised nuclear device (IND) detonation incident.
Material and Methods
We describe the results of a modified Delphi study where we sought consensus among a group of experts on the importance and difficulty of achieving the items in a list of key elements they were presented with.
Results
The expert consensus meeting included 27 experts from relevant disciplines and agencies. Consensus was reached in round 3 of the Delphi process on the initial list of 79 items that were generated during the first 2 rounds. Consensus was reached on 59 items regarding the level of importance and on 13 items regarding the difficulty of achieving the element in the design of a long-term health study.
Conclusions
The items identified in this study, including those where consensus was met among the experts, can guide emergency and public health planners in preparing for a long-term population health program after an IND incident.
Though mortuary practices seem largely archaeologically invisible in Iron Age Britain, the visible dead were subject to diverse treatment. Here, the authors report the results of a multi-strand analysis of two Iron Age skeletons buried in a stone cairn at Loch Borralie, north-west Scotland. Manipulation of one skeleton, including the possible removal of the brain, fashioning of long bones into ‘tools’ and reassembly for burial, suggests complex mortuary processing, while the east-coast origin of both individuals and their biological ties to Orkney reveal long-distance connections, expanding our understanding of funerary practice, mobility and connectivity in Iron Age Britain.
Despite the essential role that migrant domestic workers perform, their work—and human worth—is often disregarded. The issues facing migrant domestic workers go beyond harsh labor conditions and immigration regulations that tie their work permits to their employers. These issues—all of which migrant domestic workers have shared with me—involve a disregard for their humanity through policies that treat them as sources of contagion (e.g., mandatory annual HIV and pregnancy tests) and as wards (e.g., employers’ refusal to permit days off and the imposition of curfews). The problems facing migrant domestic workers stem from a devaluing of care and domestic work, alongside the routine ignoring of their own caring needs. A key principle of a caring society emphasizes the importance of meeting people’s caring needs (Glenn 2000). The inability of policymakers to recognize and meet migrant domestic workers’ need for care through policies shows migrant domestic workers’ invisibility.
This article introduces and analyzes a framework that accommodates general heterogeneity in regression modeling. It demonstrates that regression models with fixed or time-varying parameters can be estimated using the ordinary least squares (OLS) and time-varying OLS methods, respectively, across a broad class of regressors and noise processes not covered by existing theory. The proposed setting facilitates the development of asymptotic theory and the estimation of robust standard errors. The robust confidence interval estimators accommodate substantial heterogeneity in both regressors and noise. The resulting robust standard error estimates coincide with White’s (1980, Econometrica 48, 817–838) heteroskedasticity-consistent estimator but are applicable to a broader range of conditions, including models with missing data. They are computationally simple and perform well in Monte Carlo simulations. Their robustness, generality, and ease of implementation make them highly suitable for empirical applications. Finally, the article provides a brief empirical illustration.
India’s aging population faces escalating cognitive decline and neuropsychiatric challenges. This cross-sectional study examined relationships between geriatric depression, neuropsychiatric symptoms and cognitive performance among 1,013 community-dwelling elderly participants (≥60 years) in Gorakhpur using the ICMR-MUDRA Toolbox. Multistage random sampling was employed. Depression was assessed using GDS-30, and neuropsychiatric symptoms were assessed using NPI-Brief. It was observed that geriatric depression was present in 63.3% of participants, while neuropsychiatric symptoms affected 78.5%, predominantly agitation (15%) and irritability (12%). Cognitive performance declined significantly across depression severity in attention, executive function, memory, language and visuospatial domains (P < 0.001). Adjusted regression revealed that mild depression was negatively associated with executive function and memory, while severe depression showed stronger associations with language and visuospatial abilities. Neuropsychiatric symptoms independently impacted cognitive domains. These findings highlight the need for integrated mental health screening and early intervention strategies within routine geriatric care in India.
An analytical framework is presented for determining the ground states of a collisionless plasma with a given density profile, and its associated available energy, which bounds the field energy, is calculated. We show that the bound can be tightened by enforcing that the ground state is physically realisable, i.e. that the released energy is consistently stored in the fields supported by the density profile. A simple waterbag model is employed to retrieve nonlinear bounds for particularly simple conditions, further finding a phase-transition-like behaviour at the critical energy where the constraint of non-negative number densities becomes relevant. We verify the derived bounds with one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, where it is found that the true energy released is typically ${\sim} 20\,\%$ of the bound derived. Next, we present an asymptotic framework for calculating ground states with given density profiles of distribution functions close to this ground state. This framework is employed to describe a magnetised plasma, where it is shown that the ground state seeks long-wavelength structures for large electron-to-ion temperature ratios, highlighting unfavourable transport properties in this regime. By using the corrected adiabatic response in toroidal geometry (with a flux-surface average subtracted), it is found that the ground state seeks long-wavelength zonal structures. Furthermore, a crude model of a toroidal, multispecies, quasineutral plasma highlights that there is non-trivial dependence on the impurity content with certain optimal mixing ratios. A similar model is constructed to capture the effects of a fast-ion population, showing a non-trivial dependence on the exact shape of the fast-ion distribution. These results provide rigorous, density-aware limits on energy release in collisionless plasmas, and similar methods may be used to account for electromagnetic effects.
In this study, we develop epidemic reaction-diffusion models by incorporating the dependency of the diffusion rate of susceptible individuals on new infection cases, employing both Fickian and Fokker–Planck-type diffusion laws. As the first part of a two-part series, we focus on epidemics driven by frequency-dependent incidence. We explore linear, exponential and algebraic relationships between diffusion rate of the susceptible population and new infection cases to provide deeper biological insights. Our analysis establishes the global existence of solutions and characterizes the threshold dynamics using basic reproduction numbers. We find that in quasilinear parabolic systems, the Fokker–Planck-type diffusion law tends to induce spatial segregation of susceptible and infected individuals, while the Fickian law favours spatial homogenization of susceptible individuals. Additionally, the Fokker–Planck-type model, where the diffusion rate of infected individuals depends on new recovery cases, more accurately captures the cognitive diffusion behaviour of individuals.
At the turn of the sixteenth century, the city of Bruges, a considerable trading centre in the County of Flanders, witnessed a noticeable increase in rape prosecutions. Drawing on final judgments by the city magistrates, many of whom imposed the death penalty, this article examines how these prosecutions were shaped by broader concerns for social order and urban prosperity. It argues that deep-rooted anxieties about disorder and deviance among both civic authorities and the wider community fostered a more standardized policy towards sexual violence. This, in turn, enables the reconstruction of the late medieval ‘criminal-rapist’: an outsider associated with brutal and dishonourable violence, deemed particularly intolerable in ‘a city of high repute’.
The experimental study of the effects of religious messages and endorsements by religious leaders on political attitudes has a relatively short history yet has coalesced around three main claims: religious treatments are especially effective because of their religious character, effects are larger for religious affiliates than nonaffiliates, and effects are larger for high religiosity types than low religiosity types. Here, we meta-reanalyze the experimental record (58 treatment-outcome pairs drawn from 43 studies reported in 26 papers) to probe the generalizability of these claims. Our findings indicate that these three headline claims do not generalize straightforwardly across contexts: effects are large in some cases and close to zero in others, and we find no evidence in favor of the claimed heterogeneities by religious affiliation or religiosity. Based on a census of the estimands in this literature, we offer suggestions for future research that would enhance commensurability and synthesis.
Social inclusion is increasingly recognised as a key determinant of health and well-being, encompassing participation in social, economic, political and cultural life through access to resources, opportunities and relationships. Individuals with mental disorders are at increased risk of social exclusion, yet existing evidence often relies on broad population-level indicators that fail to capture the multidimensional nature of inclusion. This systematic review aimed to compare levels of social inclusion between these groups using validated psychometric instruments and to identify the dimensions in which disparities are most pronounced.
Methods
The review followed PRISMA guidelines. A two-step search strategy was conducted across PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, CINAHL and Web of Science. First, validated measures of social inclusion and related constructs were identified. Second, studies applying these instruments in individuals with and without mental disorders were retrieved. Eligible studies included adults with clinician-established or self-reported diagnosis of mental disorders and comparison groups from the general population. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to estimate standardised mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between the two groups, while a thematic narrative synthesis explored domain-specific inequalities.
Results
Ten studies met inclusion criteria, and six were included in the meta-analysis, comprising 844 individuals with mental disorders and 1086 controls. Individuals with mental disorders reported significantly lower levels of social inclusion than the general population (SMD = −0.91; 95% CI: −1.25 to −0.56). The narrative synthesis identified inequalities across several interconnected domains. Individuals with mental disorders experienced weaker social relationships, lower perceived support, reduced community participation and fewer opportunities for meaningful engagement. Marked disadvantages were also observed in employment, income, education and housing, including financial hardship, insecure living conditions and neighbourhood dissatisfaction. Several studies highlighted discrepancies between objective indicators of participation and subjective experiences of inclusion, indicating that participation alone may not reflect a sense of belonging or access to valued social roles. Socioeconomic position, gender and ethnicity appeared to intensify exclusion across domains.
Conclusions
Individuals with mental disorders experience substantial inequalities in social inclusion across interconnected relational, community and socioeconomic domains. These disparities are shaped by broader structural conditions and compounded by intersecting forms of disadvantage, including socioeconomic position, gender and ethnicity. The findings highlight the need for multidimensional, intersectional and person-centred approaches that recognise both the cumulative nature of exclusion and individuals’ subjective experiences of inclusion. Policies and interventions should address the social determinants that constrain opportunities for meaningful inclusion.
This note examines the semantics of figs in Greek and Roman culture, pointing to their association with the opposition between truth and falsehood. The relevance of this association is explored in relation to a detail in the story of Brutus (Postumius Albinus, FRHist F2 = Macrob. Sat. 3.20.5) and an aetiological episode in Ovid’s Fasti (Ov. Fast. 2.243–66).
Attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neuropsychiatric disorder. Recently, psychedelics have become of interest regarding developing treatment options for ADHD. The aim of this systematic review is to find all studies from the APA PsychInfo and MEDLINE databases, where psychedelics have been used for ADHD and assess whether further clinical studies are warranted.
Methods:
APA PsychInfo and MEDLINE were searched on the 20th of August 2025 for studies discussing ADHD and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) or psilocybin or dimethyltryptamine (DMT) or mescaline or phencyclidine or 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) or ketamine. Primary research articles in English where the effects of the psychedelics mentioned on ADHD in humans were included.
Results:
N = 1023 results were identified. Six studies were included – one randomised controlled trial (RCT) finding no statistically important difference compared to placebo, three cross-sectional studies where respondents reported positive effect of psychedelics and one where the statistically important improvement was measured by the Child Bipolar Questionnaire. In addition, one case study, where both, depressive symptoms and functioning improved with ketamine.
Conclusions:
There is not sufficient evidence to give recommendations on psychedelic use for ADHD. In addition, it is not known whether patients, whose depressive symptoms have responded positively to ketamine, have also had ADHD. Also, no research was found on how psychedelics affect patient subgroups with different etiopathology causing their symptoms. Although only six studies filled the inclusion criteria, they bring out valuable implications for further research.
