We investigate how the addition of surfactant affects the governing equations for a bubble in a two-dimensional channel in the small-capillary-number limit. In the limit where the time scale for absorption of surfactant is much shorter than the time scales for transport of surfactant along the surface of the bubble, we derive a set of idealised free-surface boundary conditions that capture the effects of surfactant in a single dimensionless ‘elasticity parameter’, and apply them to the front and rear of the bubble separately. At the front of the bubble, there are three regions of interest: the front cap, the thin film region and a transition region that smoothly connects the other two regions. Through matched asymptotic expansions, we derive predictions for the thin film height and the pressure drop across the front meniscus. We find that the viscous pressure drop across the front meniscus is always larger for a surfactant-laden bubble than for a surfactant-free bubble, by an order-one factor of up to $4^{2/3}$. Using a similar analysis at the rear of the bubble, we find that the viscous pressure drop across the rear meniscus is also always larger in magnitude for a surfactant-laden bubble than for a surfactant-free bubble, again up to a maximum factor of $4^{2/3}$. Finally, we use these results to show that, for the same flow conditions, an isolated surfactant-laden bubble in a Hele-Shaw cell will travel more slowly than an isolated surfactant-free bubble.
Polarimetric multi-offset radio-echo sounding offers improved constraints on englacial thermal conditions, basal properties and ice crystal orientation compared to standard monostatic observations. Nevertheless, such surveys are uncommon in glaciology and are typically limited in offset due to cable losses. In the 2023–24 austral summer, we deployed two radar systems on Eastwind Glacier and the McMurdo Ice Shelf in Antarctica, collecting five polarimetric common-midpoint (CMP) surveys. Using an Autonomous phase-sensitive Radio-Echo Sounder (ApRES), modified with off-the-shelf radio frequency-over-fiber (RFoF) hardware and a low-loss fiber optic link, we detect bed reflections at offsets up to the equivalent of four ice thicknesses, well beyond the theoretical point of total internal reflection. A second, cable-less system built around a software-defined radio (SDR) was deployed simultaneously as an unsynchronized receiver recording the same ApRES transmitter. These co-located datasets demonstrate the potential for cabled radar systems with integrated RFoF technology for extending maximum offsets by overcoming attenuation losses inherent to coaxial cables. Furthermore, we perform polarimetric amplitude-vs-offset analysis to probe glacier dielectric structure. Finally, we present data from deployment of the fiber optic system on Thwaites Glacier, where we detect bed reflections at an offset of 4 km, demonstrating operation on thick ice (~2.2 km).
To characterise hospital-treated multimorbidity patterns in people who subsequently died a drug-related death in Scotland, and to identify clinically meaningful associations among conditions and decedent to inform prevention and care.
Methods:
A register-based retrospective cohort study using nationally linked hospital admission (1996–2019) and mortality (2008–2019) records for 5,749 decedents. We identified hospital admissions for Elixhauser comorbidities using ICD-10 codes. Correlation analysis, network analysis, and Bayesian clustering were used to describe co-occurring conditions and identify patient clusters with distinct comorbidity profiles.
Results:
Over half (50.9%) of decedents had at least one admission for an Elixhauser comorbidity. The most frequent were related to alcohol use (38.2%), drug use (29.1%), other neurological disorders (18.0%, mainly epilepsy/seizures/anoxic brain injury), depression (15.2%), and psychoses (12.5%). Network analysis highlighted drug use, alcohol use, psychoses, depression, and neurological disorders as central conditions. Bayesian clustering identified seven distinct patient clusters, including groups characterised by: high psychiatric and drug-use admissions; extensive physical comorbidities; alcohol and liver disease; dominant neurological issues and depression.
Conclusions:
Individuals experiencing drug-related deaths exhibit substantial multimorbidity with distinct patterns often dominated by substance use and mental ill-health but also including significant physical health clusters. These distinct profiles underscore the need for integrated, tailored care strategies addressing substance use, psychiatric, and physical health needs to mitigate mortality risk.
Spinal CSF leaks are a known cause of spontaneous intracranial hypotension, often presenting with orthostatic headaches and other neurological symptoms. While epidural blood patches are commonly used as initial treatment, many patients require surgery due to persistent symptoms. This study integrates a retrospective institutional cohort and a systematic literature review to evaluate the safety and efficacy of surgical dural repair for spontaneous spinal CSF leaks.
Methods:
A retrospective chart review included all patients who underwent surgery for spontaneous spinal CSF leak at a Canadian center between June 2017 and December 2023. Clinical presentation, imaging findings, surgical approach and postoperative outcomes were assessed. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review identified studies reporting surgical management and outcomes for spinal CSF leaks.
Results:
Forty patients (21 females, 19 males; mean age 50.48 ± 11.88 years) were included. Type 1 ventral dural CSF leaks predominated (72.5%), most commonly in the thoracic spine. Spinal longitudinal extradural collection and cranial stigmata were present in 70% and 75%, respectively. Microscopic direct dural repair led to clinical improvement in 82.5%, with headache resolution or improvement in 85.72%. The complication rate was 7.5% with all complications being transient. The systematic review included 20 studies (483 patients), reporting an 84.06% pooled surgical success rate, with transient complications most common in direct suturing techniques.
Conclusion:
Surgical repair is a safe and effective treatment for spontaneous spinal CSF leaks, particularly in patients with failed conservative treatment. Favorable outcomes support early, anatomically guided surgical intervention.
Timely blood cultures (BCx) are required by SEP-1. The recent BCx bottle shortage necessitated enhanced BCx stewardship. At two hospitals during the shortage, SEP-1 metric compliance declined related to BCx utilization. Review of cases where BCx were not obtained demonstrated most BCx were safely avoided without demonstrable patient harm.
Surface patterns on ablating materials are known to appear in both high-speed ground and flight tests, but the mechanisms behind their formation are not known. In this paper, the origins of surface patterns are investigated via a local linear stability analysis of compressible laminar boundary layers over a flat camphor plate. The effects of sublimation and conjugate heat transfer are included on both the baseflow and the linear fluctuations. This newly developed framework identifies a single mode that fully characterises the stability of the surface, and this surface mode becomes unstable under laminar conditions only when the wall temperature exceeds that of an adiabatic wall, $T_{\textit{ad}}$. These findings are consistent with experimental observations, where laminar flow conditions at adiabatic wall temperatures are observed to be stable. The present analysis also reveals that the nature of this surface mode varies as a function of the oblique angle $\psi = \tan ^{-1}({\beta /\alpha })$, where $\alpha$ and $\beta$ are the streamwise and spanwise wavenumbers. As the wall temperature increases, the most unstable orientation of the surface mode shifts from streamwise alignment ($\psi = 0$), towards the sonic angle ($\psi = \psi _s = \cos ^{-1}(1/M_e)$) and then towards spanwise alignment ($\psi = 90^\circ$). Finally, a critical wavenumber is identified (i.e. one at which the temporal growth rate reaches a maximum) which implies the formation of a surface pattern of a specific wavelength and orientation.
The heligmosomid nematodes Heligmosomum mixtum and Heligmosomoides glareoli are dominant helminths infecting bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) in the temperate forests of NE Poland. Both are relatively long-lived species that accumulate in hosts with increasing host age. Based on studies showing that the closely related species, Heligmosomoides bakeri is immunomodulatory in murine hosts, we hypothesized that heligmosomid-infected bank voles should show higher prevalence and abundance with other helminths. To test this hypothesis, we analysed a database containing quantitative data on helminth parasites of bank voles (n = 922), comprising worm burdens recorded during 4 surveys, conducted at 3- to 4-year intervals, in 3 forest sites, during late summer of each year. After controlling for both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the presence of heligmosomid nematodes was significantly associated with higher species richness of other helminth species, with the greater likelihood of voles carrying other helminth species, with higher worm burdens of other helminths and with significant positive covariance of heligmosomid burdens with those of other concurrently residing helminths. These patterns might be explained by a number of biological processes, including correlated host exposure or correlated host susceptibility not driven by the parasitic infections themselves. However, we consider it most likely that these results are consistent with the idea that like H. bakeri, the heligmosomid nematodes of bank voles employ non-specific immunomodulation to facilitate their own long-term survival, with the consequence that other concurrently infecting intestinal helminths benefit.
Language models (LMs) have attracted the attention of researchers from the natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) communities working in specialized domains, including climate change. NLP and ML practitioners have been making efforts to reap the benefits of LMs of various sizes, including large language models, in order to both simplify and accelerate the processing of large collections of text data, and in doing so, help climate change stakeholders to gain a better understanding of past and current climate-related developments, thereby staying on top of both ongoing changes and increasing amounts of data. This paper presents a brief history of language models and ties LMs’ beginnings to them becoming an emerging technology for analysing and interacting with texts in the specialized domain of climate change. The paper reviews existing domain-specific LMs and systems based on general-purpose large language models for analysing climate change data, with special attention being paid to the LMs’ and LM-based systems’ functionalities, intended use and audience, architecture, the data used in their development, the applied evaluation methods, and their accessibility. The paper concludes with a brief overview of potential avenues for future research vis-à-vis the advantages and disadvantages of deploying LMs and LM-based solutions in a high-stakes scenario such as climate change research. For the convenience of readers, explanations of specialized terms used in NLP and ML are provided.
Involvement in clinical mental health research can be a challenge for services isolated from academic institutions, limiting opportunities for patients to receive innovative interventions and for clinicians to explore interest in research. We aimed to increase mental health research capacity in Somerset NHS Foundation Trust via a range of initiatives from collaboration between a senior clinician and research and development colleagues.
Results
Over the course of the project, the number of participants recruited to National Institute for Health and Care Research-adopted mental health and dementia research projects quadrupled over a 2-year period, from 57 to 232, and the number of projects hosted rose from 9 to 23. A total of 165 clinicians signed up to receive information about ongoing studies.
Clinical implications
We found considerable appetite for becoming involved in research among mental health clinicians, and were able to provide opportunities for research experience as well as access to innovative studies for local patients.
This article argues that the global Business and Human Rights movement demonstrates a push towards a human-rights type of sustainable corporation, reconciling economic development and human rights. It explains the necessity for and significance of a definition of a sustainable corporation at the intersection of traditional international human rights and sustainable development instruments. It argues, inter alia, that an internationally recognised definition of a sustainable corporation can settle fundamental questions and create a minimal framework for meaningful discourse on corporate accountability for human rights, climate change and the environment. It identifies difficulties of defining a sustainable corporation such as the integration problem. It suggests ‘direct human rights obligation’ as a minimally sufficient normative criterion for the definitional correctness of a sustainable corporation. The suggested definition of sustainable corporation requires taking a normative position which makes the term ‘essentially contested’ resulting in discursive and behavioural norm contestation in the search for definitional determinacy and consensus within the divide between international and domestic law.
This article discusses the official discourse that appeared in Macau’s Portuguese-language media and the documentaries that were shot there by Portuguese filmmakers in the 1960s and 1970s, especially focusing on the productions that followed the 123 Incident and which largely functioned as a response to it. These riots occurred in December 1966, when Chinese residents of Macau used Cultural Revolution-like protests to contest what they viewed as an inefficient and unfair Portuguese administration. They had a long-lasting and deep impact, weakening Portuguese colonial rule and increasing the influence of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and local Maoists in Macau. In an attempt to counter the image-damage caused by the incident and legitimise Portuguese sovereignty in the territory during what was its worst crisis in the post-war period, Portuguese official discourse and these films came to promote Macau as a site of ‘miraculous’ development and modernisation that had as its basis Luso-Chinese partnership. Furthermore, Macau was advocated as an exemplary case of good neighbourhood policy towards the PRC and of coexistence at all levels, particularly ethnically and politically. This, it was suggested, made it a unique place and a model for the world in a time of cold war.
A general way to represent stochastic differential equations (SDEs) on smooth manifolds is based on the Schwartz morphism. In this manuscript, we are interested in SDEs on a smooth manifold $M$ that are driven by p-dimensional Wiener process $W_t \in \mathbb{R}^p$ and time $t$. In terms of the Schwartz morphism, such an SDE is represented by a Schwartz morphism that morphs the semimartingale $(t,W_t)\in\mathbb{R}^{p+1}$ into a semimartingale on the manifold $M$. We show that it is possible to construct such Schwartz morphisms using special maps that we call diffusion generators. We show that one of the ways to construct a diffusion generator is by considering the flow of differential equations. One particular case is the construction of diffusion generators using Lagrangian vector fields. Using the diffusion generator approach, we also give the extended Itô formula (also known as generalized Itô formula or Itô–Wentzell formula) for SDEs on manifolds.
Promoting fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption is a public health priority. This study assessed compliance with the international recommendation of consuming at least 400g of F&V daily among Mexican adults and analysed its association with the five stages of behaviour change from the Transtheoretical Model (Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation for action, Action, and Maintenance). Using data from 5203 adults (ages 20–59) in the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey, dietary intake was collected via a food frequency questionnaire. Compliance was defined dichotomously (Yes/No), and readiness to change was assessed using a specific survey module. Multiple logistic regression models examined the association between stages of change and compliance, adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, and health characteristics, as well as perceived barriers and self-efficacy. Nationally, 26.3% of adults met the F&V recommendation. Compliance was significantly higher among individuals in the Preparation for action (OR 3.62, 95% CI: 1.82–7.19), Action (OR 4.50, 95% CI: 1.8–11.25), and Maintenance (OR 9.54, 95% CI: 4.76–19.13) than those in the Precontemplation stage. Higher compliance was also significantly associated with greater self-efficacy (OR 1.86, 95% CI: 1.4–2.47), being in the highest socioeconomic tertile (OR 1.71, 95% CI: 1.25–2.33), and living in the central region (OR 1.70, 95% CI: 1.18–2.45). Conversely, individuals reporting a dislike for vegetables were less likely to meet recommendations (OR 0.67, 95% CI: 0.48–0.94). These findings highlight the value of developing stage-tailored interventions that consider both psychological and structural barriers to improve F&V consumption.
Early in the SARS–CoV-2 pandemic, most jurisdictions implemented mandatory face covering policies across healthcare settings. This intervention, which lasted multiple years, was unprecedented in psychiatry. Masks may affect the delivery of mental healthcare, given its reliance on nuanced communication and establishing a therapeutic alliance.
Aims
This scoping review aimed to provide an overview of the current literature concerning the impact of face masks in mental health settings beyond infection control and identify research gaps to guide future research and policy.
Method
Systematic searches were completed in the MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus and CINAHL databases on 14 August 2024. Articles were eligible if they described peer-reviewed empirical studies involving people with mental disorders or mental health clinicians that reported on impacts of face coverings.
Results
Twenty-eight studies were selected for inclusion, involving 5385 participants. There was considerable heterogeneity among studies. Negative effects of face masks were reported in 26 studies in at least one domain. Themes from the survey-based literature included face masks negatively affecting communication, the therapeutic relationship and overall assessment quality. Experimental studies using emotion recognition tasks showed that people with mental disorders were disadvantaged by masks when interpreting emotions from facial expressions. The most commonly studied population was people with autism spectrum disorder. Children and people with severe or acute mental illness were underrepresented. Only two studies expressly recruited psychiatrists.
Conclusions
Policy makers should be aware of adverse impacts of mask-wearing in mental health settings and consider these in evolving risk–benefit analyses. Further research is needed to establish the extent of impacts on population subgroups.
In England, psychological therapies provided in primary care are recommended as first-line treatment for people living with mild-to-moderate dementia experiencing depression or anxiety. It is known that people living with dementia experience more barriers to accessing therapy than people without dementia, but such inequalities in terms of rates of access to primary care services are yet to be characterised.
Methods
In this retrospective, observational study of linked electronic healthcare records, the national database of the National Health Service (NHS) Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression programme was used to compare pathways to accessing therapy between 6623 people living with dementia and 4 825 489 without dementia between 2012 and 2019. Outcomes included access to an assessment, to therapy and reasons for discharge. Primary analyses used a propensity-score matched cohort to compare outcomes. Exact matching was used for the NHS service entity.
Results
The prevalence of dementia in the study cohort was lower than the prevalence of dementia in a representative population, based on an estimation of prevalence in people with mild-to-moderate age over 35 (0.23% in our study vs 3.82% in previous research). Compared to people without dementia, people living with dementia were less likely to access an assessment (odds ratio [OR] = 0.60; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.55–0.65), to subsequently receive therapy (OR = 0.67; 95% CI: 0.61–0.73) and more likely to be discharged because services were deemed not suitable before having an assessment (relative rate ratio [RRR] = 4.90; 95% CI: 4.20–5.72) and starting therapy (RRR = 2.74; 95% CI: 2.24–3.35). Female gender, social deprivation, Asian ethnicity and less common dementia subtypes (such as frontotemporal dementia) were also associated with poorer access rates and a higher likelihood of services being deemed not suitable. Involvement of care partners in the referral process was associated with better access rates.
Conclusions
Pathways to accessing primary care psychological therapy services must be made more accessible for people living with dementia. Better access could be achieved by increasing referrer awareness and training for staff within services to promote access for people living with dementia (especially for groups under-represented in services), better understanding how to involve care partners in the process, as well as when specialist support might be more suited in secondary care. More granularity in the medical coding of rarer dementia diagnoses in electronic health records would also allow for better statistically powered research for these groups.
Research on helminth parasites of amphibians and reptiles has a long-standing history and has seen continuous growth. Recent efforts by various authors to compile comprehensive checklists are crucial for advancing our understanding of parasite diversity, ecology and evolution. Nematodes belonging to the family Molineidae parasitize vertebrates worldwide, with the genera Kentropyxia, Oswaldocruzia, Poekilostrongylus, Schulzia and Typhlopsia identified as infecting amphibians and reptiles across the Neotropical and Panamanian regions. While these parasites are relatively common, there is a lack of updated identification keys and incomplete information about their morphology, biology, distribution and host range. In this paper, we conducted an extensive bibliographic survey of Molineidae nematodes in amphibians and reptiles and provide a checklist of 53 species found in the Neotropical and Panamanian regions, including the Caribbean islands, along with updated details on their diversity, host range and geographic distribution.
Fine-grained mortality forecasting has gained momentum in actuarial research due to its ability to capture localized, short-term fluctuations in death rates. This paper introduces MortFCNet, a deep-learning method that predicts weekly death rates using region-specific weather inputs. Unlike traditional Serfling-based methods and gradient-boosting models that rely on predefined fixed Fourier terms and manual feature engineering, MortFCNet automatically learns patterns from raw time-series data without needing explicitly defined Fourier terms or manual feature engineering. Extensive experiments across over 200 NUTS-3 regions in France, Italy, and Switzerland demonstrate that MortFCNet consistently outperforms both a standard Serfling-type baseline and XGBoost in terms of predictive accuracy. Our ablation studies further confirm its ability to uncover complex relationships in the data without feature engineering. Moreover, this work underscores a new perspective on exploring deep learning for advancing fine-grained mortality forecasting.

Ophelia was the jilted lover of the melancholy prince in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a woman whose life ends in suicide. Swift’s song says her fiancé, Travis Kelce, saved her from the fate of Ophelia, positioning her previous boyfriends as moody philosophers and the fun-loving jock Kelce as the anti-Hamlet. This song also recuperates Swift as a reader of Shakespeare after the startingly bad account of Romeo and Juliet in “Love Story,” the song that started Swift’s career.
