Summary

When a gerund in a case other than the nominative ought to have an accusative object, the most common Latin construction is to substitute a gerundive for the gerund. The gerundive takes on the gender and number of the noun that should have been the gerund’s object, and the noun takes on the case that the gerund would have had. But the meaning remains that of the gerund.
