Criticism on Wilkie Collins’s Poor Miss Finch (1872) has noted the strong contrasts Collins sets up between binaries such as sight and touch and able-bodiedness and disability. This article proposes that these structuring binaries cohere around three interdependent “problems of knowing”: the near-incommunicability of subjective, embodied experience; the ways in which sensory hierarchies transform normative forms of knowledge into totalizing forms of knowing; and, lastly, the problems of knowing inherent in narrative depictions of lived experience. While sensation fiction has been increasingly reexamined and revalued, much of the radical potential of its embodied reading techniques remains to be explored. This article argues that Poor Miss Finch seeks to bridge the gap created by the three problems of knowing, drawing on sensation fiction’s formal features of melodrama and sudden disruptions of domesticity to create moments of sensory disorientation and heightened affect, enabling imaginative immersion in nonnormative embodied and perceptual experiences.
We study intersecting families of words from the Erdős–Ko–Rado perspective. When the alphabet size is $2$, a maximum intersecting family is not necessarily a star. However, we prove that every maximum $3$-wise intersecting family is a star. We also present a new proof of the known result for alphabets of size at least $3$: maximum intersecting families of words are exactly the stars.
The excavations at Liberty Southwark (LDM21) carried out by Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) have yielded one of the largest assemblages of Roman wall-painted plaster in London. In the assessment and reassembling of the plasters, the building material specialist discovered two inscriptions unique to Roman Britain and likely to the study of Roman wall paintings in general. Pit (423) yielded what looks to be a signature by the painter while (135) produced a near-complete Greek alphabet scored into the plaster. Both inscriptions were analysed in the greater context of the Roman world in which comparisons of similar inscriptions were made.
This study considers Glomalveolina subtilis Hottinger, 1960, to be a distinct species within the genus Glomalveolina, previously grouped with G. lepidula (Schwager, 1883). This species is distinguished by unique morphological and biometrical features, setting it apart from closely related species and establishing it as a significant biostratigraphic marker for the early Ypresian (SBZ6-7) in the central Neo-Tethys. Although first reported from the Iranian platform, it expands the paleobiogeographic distribution of G. subtilis, with earlier records from the western Neo-Tethys (Mediterranean and North African basins) during the early Ilerdian (SBZ5–SBZ6) and from the eastern Neo-Tethys (China) in the middle Ilerdian (SBZ7–SBZ8). The Alveolina biostratigraphy is correlated with the calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy, placing it in the middle part of the NP10 Zone. This discovery highlights the broader distribution of G. subtilis and its significance in refining biostratigraphic correlations and understanding foraminiferal evolution during the Paleocene–Eocene transition.
We cannot justifably believe that any currently available actions will have a non-negligible positive influence a billion or more years in the future. I offer three arguments for this thesis. According to the Infinite Washout Argument, given the non-zero chance that your actions will produce infinitely many effects, any finite effects will wash out in expectation. According to the Cluelessness Argument, we cannot justifiably guess what actions are likely to have positive effects in a billion-plus years. We cannot be justified, for example, in thinking that nuclear war or human extinction would be more likely to have bad than good consequences that far into the future. According to the Negligibility Argument, even if we could justifiably guess that some particular action is likelier to have good than bad consequences that far in the future, the odds of good consequences would be negligible due to the compounding of probabilities over time.
This ethnography explores the temporalizing practices of workers at the Litani River powerplant—a key site of national infrastructural development in Lebanon. Departing from dominant narratives of crisis or collapse, it argues that workers inhabit a distinct spatial and temporal mode described as tarabuṭ maṣlaḥi, an ambivalent alliance of convenience with the Litani river, its infrastructure, and the state. Rather than viewing their experience through paradigms of progress or decline, workers cultivate a modular relation to time, and to the seemingly isolated powerplant, marked by endurance. Tarabuṭ maṣlaḥi, the article suggests, is a mode of exercising and reproducing power at the intersection of material structures and embodied experience. Like a Möbius strip, its fraught political relations and dynamics of social reproduction continuously weave the space they constitute. It illustrates power’s reach through time while also revealing workers’ subtle ways of challenging it, beyond binaries of submission or resistance.
This paper investigates the contamination effect in Japan’s mixed-member majoritarian (MMM) electoral system by examining whether the presence of a party’s candidate in a single-member district (SMD) increases its vote share in the proportional representation (PR) tier. While mixed systems are designed to combine the benefits of majoritarian and proportional rules, scholars have debated whether these systems operate independently across tiers or whether contamination occurs. Using panel data from Diet elections in Japan between 2013 and 2025, I analyse how the changing candidacy status for Japanese parties impacted their PR vote share. The results from propensity score-weighted two-way fixed effects models indicate a significant contamination effect for some parties: minor parties tend to gain higher PR vote shares in districts where they field SMD candidates, creating incentives to nominate non-viable candidates. Also, candidates with prior political or professional experience were more effective in boosting their party’s PR vote share. This study highlights how the interplay between tiers in MMM systems affects party strategies and disproportionality, and underscores the strategic dilemma faced by parties under Japan’s increasingly fragmented party system.
Familial hypercholesterolaemia remains substantially underdiagnosed worldwide despite effective preventive therapies. Evidence increasingly supports paediatric-centred detection combined with cascade and reverse cascade strategies to improve population-level identification and reduce premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We summarise contemporary familial hypercholesterolaemia screening models with emphasis on paediatric approaches, implementation barriers, and health system requirements, and we present the EPIRUS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Reverse Cascade Project as a pragmatic regional model in Greece. A literature search (December 2025 to January 2026) was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using terms related to “familial hypercholesterolemia,” “familial hypercholesterolaemia,” “screening,” “cascade,” “reverse cascade,” and “population programme.” Eligible publications included human studies and evidence syntheses evaluating universal, opportunistic, cascade, or paediatric screening strategies, and implementation or economic analyses. Evidence consistently indicates that opportunistic detection and conventional cascade screening alone cannot close the diagnostic gap because of low index-case ascertainment and fragmented pathways. Universal or structured paediatric programmes demonstrate feasibility, high diagnostic yield after infancy, and capacity to trigger family-based case-finding. Recent data show low-density lipoprotein cholesterol discrimination is limited in newborns but becomes reliable from age ≥1 year, supporting childhood screening. We describe EPIRUS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia, a targeted paediatric programme (primarily ages 4–16 years) using lipid thresholds and family history triggers, systematic phenotyping, and next-generation sequencing to confirm diagnosis and enable cascade and reverse cascade screening. EPIRUS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia illustrates how paediatric entry points can operationalise family-based detection within routine clinical care in a decentralised setting and can generate real-world implementation evidence to inform scalable national strategies.
This contribution presents the analysis of previously undescribed material from Early Jurassic deposits of west-central Argentina. Opisoma is an astartid bivalve assigned to the subfamily Opinae. It is characterized by its robust trigonal hinge and the absence of lateral teeth. Wing-shaped bivalves are an informal, polyphyletic group characterized by shells strongly compressed in the anteroposterior direction, a case of morphological convergence that appears in several extinct lineages, including Opisoma, and persists today in the cockle Corculum. Although astartids typically show shallow infaunal habits, Opisoma developed an epifaunal or semi-infaunal lifestyle, maintaining the commissural plane perpendicular to the substrate, likely associated with photosymbiosis. During the Early Jurassic, reef systems developed in low-latitude marine environments of the Tethys and Panthalassa, dominated by large gregarious bivalves known as the Lithiotis fauna, within which Opisoma represented a subordinate component. The specimens studied here were analyzed using traditional techniques and computed tomography to provide new, robust evidence addressing the longstanding debate regarding valve orientation in Opisoma. The new species Opisoma romeroi is described. This Neuquén Basin record represents the southernmost occurrence known for the genus and significantly expands its paleogeographic distribution.
This paper offers a reassessment of the expansion of Spanish banks in Latin America between 1990 and 2020. We build upon the seminal work of Pablo Martín-Aceña and draw on the intangible assets framework developed by Guillén (2005) and Guillén & García Canal (2010). Incorporating new primary sources, particularly first-hand testimonies from key participants, we argue that it was not financial strength or technological invention that necessitated expansion, but decisive organizational capabilities proved instrumental. This perspective sheds new light on the motivations behind the expansion, the processes of consolidation, and the relative success of Spanish banks in the region. Our analysis reveals how strategic entry methods, innovative managerial practices, and targeted technological developments enabled these institutions to gain a competitive edge over both domestic banks and long-established international competitors. A key theoretical contribution lies in our distinction between technological adoption and transformative deployment.
Let $(A,G,\alpha )$ be a partial dynamical system and let $A\rtimes _{\alpha ,r} G$ denote the associated reduced partial crossed product. We introduce the Haagerup property for partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras. We prove that the partial crossed product $A\rtimes _{\alpha ,r} G$ has the Haagerup property if and only if both A and the partial action $\alpha $ have the Haagerup property. As a consequence, we obtain an equivalence between the Haagerup property of the partial crossed product, and that of the underlying $C^*$-algebra and the acting group. We also show that the Haagerup property is preserved under inductive limits of $C^*$-algebras and apply this result to study the Haagerup property of inductive limits of partial crossed products.
Let $F \ast G$ be a free product of a free group F and a LERF group G. We provide sufficient conditions for a subgroup H of $F \ast G$ to be $\mathcal A\cup \mathcal S$-separable, that is, for any finite set $\{\gamma _1, \ldots , \gamma _n\} \subset (F \ast G) \setminus H$, there is a surjection f from $F \ast G$ to an alternating or symmetric group such that $f(\gamma _i) \notin f(H)$ for all i. As a corollary, any finitely generated infinite-index subgroup of a free group is $\mathcal A\cup \mathcal S$-separable in the free product of the free group and an arbitrary LERF group, generalising a result of Wilton [‘Alternating quotients of free groups’, Enseign. Math.58 (2012), 49–60].
This article examines the early post–Second World War Polish state’s campaign to ‘repatriate’ German citizens of Polish descent from the Ruhr region and the consequent official and public contestations that erupted between Polish, British and German observers. Alternate interpretations of the Ruhr’s labour regime and its transformative ethno-social impact lay at the heart of these debates. For many Polish commentators, repatriating the Ruhrpolen from Germany’s industrial heartland was inextricably intertwined with Poland’s recent acquisition of the ‘Recovered Territories’ and modernising growth imperatives. By contrast, British and (especially) German observers depicted the Ruhr’s labour regime as a transformative forge of Germanisation, one that had elevated individuals of Polish descent into the region’s native working class and now depended on their presence to drive recovery efforts in Western Europe. Even after the late 1940s, repatriation – and frustrations therewith – continued to serve as a legitimising force for redemptive state-building projects in West Germany and Poland.
Glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists are beneficial for glycaemic control, weight loss, and cardiovascular health. Because GLP-1 agonists may be a useful tool in the management of obesity in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), we examined whether GLP-1 agonists are effective and safe for weight loss in adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) and explored the effects of sex and CHD complexity.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective cohort study of ACHD patients who were prescribed a GLP-1 agonist from 1/1/2022–3/31/2024 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Patients were subdivided by CHD anatomic complexity. The primary outcome was the change in weight over time. Side effects were explored as a secondary outcome.
Results:
The moderate complexity ACHD group had the fastest weight loss during both the first 6 months and 12 months of treatment, but was comparable to the other two ACHD complexities in the full period of follow-up. Patients in the simple and great complexity groups required 12 months of treatment to reach meaningful weight loss. Females had a faster rate of weight loss compared to males across all ACHD complexity levels. The most common side effects reported were gastrointestinal, such as nausea, acid reflux, and diarrhoea.
Conclusion:
This study provides evidence that GLP-1 agonists are effective for weight loss in ACHD patients, with the greatest weight loss in females and patients with moderate ACHD complexity. Moreover, GLP-1 agonists in the ACHD population have a reasonable side effect profile that is typical for these agents.
To assess the acceptability and appropriateness of remote patient monitoring and self-administered pulse oximetry among high-risk COVID-19 patients, triage centre staff, and study personnel in Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela, Honduras.
Introduction:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Honduras Secretariat of Health and partners conducted a randomized trial to assess the impact of remote patient monitoring with versus without self-administered pulse oximetry in high-risk populations in urban Honduras. Acceptability and appropriateness were examined to inform future intervention adaptation.
Methods:
This mixed-methods study included trial participants, study and triage centre staff. Data sources include trial data, computer-aided self-interviews, and in-depth interviews. The trial ran from March 2022 to January 2023.
Findings:
1767 participants completed a disenrollment questionnaire. Thirty-four providers completed a self-interview, and 16 participated in an in-depth interview. Respondents understood interventions and expressed positive attitudes; SESAL staff attitudes were less positive. 94.9% of participants reported willingness to participate again. Some staff expressed concern over participant comprehension and pulse oximeter self-administration, but participants reported successful use. Providers were confident implementing the intervention, but some questioned its appropriateness given competing priorities. Overall, study participants and healthcare providers believed interventions were an acceptable way to monitor for deterioration during the acute phase of a COVID-19 infection. Findings showed that an intervention can be acceptable, but appropriateness may be less clear-cut due to competing priorities. The approach shows promise for adaptation to other settings experiencing health emergencies where technology penetration is high and healthcare availability does not align with demand; appropriateness considerations should be explored prior to implementation.
Douglas Laycock’s career in Religion Clause scholarship and advocacy spans two periods marked by two distinct concerns at the heart of the debates. This article connects them. In the first period, from the 1980s into the 2000s, the central issue was what general value or principle should drive Religion Clause decision-making. Laycock’s approach, substantive neutrality toward religion, focused on minimizing government effects on religious choices and thus led the way in reconciling two key values: neutrality on the one hand, and religious liberty or voluntarism on the other. In the second period, from the mid-2000s forward, religious liberty became caught up in the United States’ cycle of polarization. Laycock again led the way; his work on Religion Clause neutrality supports the effective defense of religious liberty in a polarized age. In particular, he called for aggregating neutrality: recognizing that any policy can have differing effects on the religious choices of different relevant actors and comparing those effects with the goal of minimizing burdensome effects on religious choices overall. This approach, done with care, can take account of the effect on competing sides and thus productively address polarized conflicts.
