Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) involves altered neurodevelopment, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Aperiodic EEG components may reflect neural functions like excitatory/inhibitory balance, but their age-related differences in ADHD and link to default mode network (DMN) dysfunction are unexplored.
Methods
We included 110 medication-naïve children/adolescents with ADHD and 100 matched typically developing peers aged 6–14 years. Aperiodic parameters (exponent, offset) were derived, and source-localized alpha-band DMN coherence was computed. The sample was stratified into middle childhood (6–9 years) and early adolescence (10–14 years) subgroups to delineate age-dependent patterns.
Results
ADHD showed globally increased exponent and offset versus controls. Normative age-related decreases were significantly attenuated in ADHD, indicating divergence from typical development. Age-stratified analyses revealed distinct patterns: in middle childhood, increased frontal offset correlated positively with inattention (right hemisphere) and hyperactivity/impulsivity (left hemisphere); in early adolescence, it associated with reduced coherence in two DMN pathways (right mSFG–left hippocampus and left mSFG–right MTG).
Conclusions
Aperiodic activity differences in ADHD are age-dependent. Younger children exhibit focal, symptom-linked frontal abnormalities, whereas adolescents show pervasive network-level dysregulation. Aperiodic measures may capture age-varying ADHD pathophysiology, informing developmentally targeted biomarkers.
This study investigates how language learners prioritize criteria for evaluating data-driven learning (DDL) tools and how these priorities relate to tool preference. While previous research has proposed multiple criteria for evaluating the perceived effectiveness of DDL tools in capturing the emic dimension of the learner experience, empirical work has scantily examined how learners differentially prioritize these criteria, or how such priority structures can be empirically incorporated into systematic comparisons of tools. Given the recent emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in language learning, this study examines how GenAI-based tools may contribute to DDL when judged against learner-valued effectiveness criteria. Drawing on a literature review, six criteria were identified: sentence comprehensibility, relevance to semantic learning, relevance to syntactic learning, perceived pedagogical value, accessibility for independent use, and support for autonomous learning. Thirty-five Korean EFL university students completed an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) task. First, they made pairwise comparisons among the six criteria, yielding priority weights that indicated the relative importance learners attach to each aspect of DDL effectiveness. Second, the study compared the perceived effectiveness of a traditional online concordancer that accesses the British National Corpus with that of a custom-developed GenAI-based concordancer, prioritizing these weighted criteria. The results indicate that learners assign differentiated importance to the six criteria and that these priority patterns are associated with the concordance they regard as more effective. This study demonstrates the usefulness of AHP for modelling multi-criteria, perception-based evaluations of DDL tools and incorporating learners’ priority judgements into the comparison of alternative tool designs.
Phonaesthetics examines why some languages are perceived as more aesthetically appealing than others, independent of meaning. Here we test whether phonetic and phonological properties predict listeners’ evaluations of 24 European languages using studio-quality recordings of native speakers reading the same text. 204 participants rated each recording on four dimensions: beauty, eros, status and order on 0–100 scales and indicated whether the language sounded familiar. Because familiarity reliably boosts evaluations, we first quantified its impact and then focused our main analyses on trials where languages were not recognized. We fitted Bayesian multilevel models with random intercepts for listener and language to examine a broad set of predictors: consonant place and manner distributions, vocalic share, voiced consonants, a sonority index, vowel height and backness and suprasegmental typology (speech rate, syllable structure, stress and rhythm type). Across most model families, effects were small and uncertain, with credible intervals (CrIs) overlapping zero, and variance was dominated by between-listener differences. The clearest and most consistent segmental signal was vowel height: a higher proportion of close vowels predicted lower status and order ratings. Overall, the results suggest that while a few fine-grained segmental cues may shape specific evaluative dimensions, phonaesthetic judgments are strongly shaped by listener-level variability, with only a small number of fixed individual-difference and phonetic predictors showing robust associations.
This research was conducted in response to a report by a producer in southwestern Ontario of severe corn injury following an application that included multiple herbicides, an activator adjuvant, and a drift reduction agent. Eight field trials were conducted between 2024 and 2025 near Ridgetown, Ontario, Canada, to evaluate corn tolerance to mixtures of multiple active ingredients, an adjuvant, and drift retardent applied at two early postemergence growth stages (V2 to V3 and V3 to V4). Isoxaflutole applied alone or in combination with atrazine at either growth stage caused minimal visible corn injury at all time points, with ≤1% injury at 1 wk after application (WAA) and no injury at 2, 4, 6, and 8 WAA. Isoxaflutole + atrazine + glyphosate, applied at the V2–V3 or V3–V4 stage, caused 7% and 9% visible corn injury at 1 WAA and 3% and 5% at 2 WAA, respectively; however, visible corn injury was ≤1% at 4, 6, and 8 WAA. Isoxaflutole + atrazine + glyphosate + HiActivate, applied at the V2–V3 and V3–V4 stages, caused greater and more persistent visible corn injury, with 7% and 16% injury at 1 WAA and 5% and 10% injury at 2 WAA, respectively; visible corn injury declined to ≤5% at 4, 6, and 8 WAA. Isoxaflutole + atrazine + glyphosate + HiActivate + InterLock, applied at the V2–V3 and V3–V4 stages, caused 17% and 28% visible corn injury at 1 WAA and 11% and 17% at 2 WAA, respectively. Visible corn injury persisted with up to 8%, 7%, and 4% injury at 4, 6, and 8 WAA, respectively. There was no adverse effect on corn height, biomass, and grain yield with any of the treatments evaluated at either application timing. Results indicate that tank mixtures with multiple active ingredients can increase visible corn injury, but the injury was transient and did not affect yield.
This chapter examines how “open science” is a practical problem for scientists, focusing on what is central to it: the extended access to research data. It considers how researchers evaluate the social and moral accountabilities of the open access to data and the tensions that result from them. In astronomy, most large scientific datasets are made by collaborations. This chapter considers two collaborations, including the MUWAGS team discussed in Chapter 6. As these teams’ members prepared datasets for public release, they became both inquirers into, and actors in, what many astronomers refer to as their discipline’s “culture of open data access.” Both teams can be described as groups of practical methodologists who used “inner dialogues” to explore the normative expectations and tensions of this domain ethnographically, seeking to inhabit proper statuses in it. The chapter argues that examining scientists’ understanding of statuses and their achievement offers resources for a refined critique of “open science” that is considerate of the context sensitivity of data production and use. Along the way, it examines some methods by which scientists, as members, are “doing ethnography.”
Gold mask burials constitute a remarkable cultural phenomenon linking diverse landscapes between the northern Aegean and the central Balkans. Their primary manifestation includes full-face masks and gold foils used to cover the body, accompanied by an ostentatious, largely standardized set of grave goods dating to the second half of the sixth century bce. The roots of this practice lie in earlier centuries, with modest gold sheets placed over the mouth. During the Late Archaic period, full masks and mouthpieces appeared in parallel, reflecting shared ritual traditions. This study traces the practice beyond the historical territory of the Macedonian kingdom, arguing against direct links to Macedonian ethnicity. By examining shared ceramic technology and settlement patterns, the paper suggests that the spread of this funerary custom was driven by medium- to large-scale mobility. This model favours fluid cultural interactions over the ‘heroic’ narratives of large-scale invasions or political expansions previously presumed to have occurred across these culturally diverse landscapes.
This paper studies a class of degenerate parabolic partial differential equation models that describe the dynamics of single-species populations with cognitive functions in toxic environments. The core innovation lies in introducing cognitive functions to simulate the ability of species to perceive toxins and adaptively adjust their behaviours, which in turn affects population density. This mechanism is characterized by a nonlinear degenerate Pratial Differential Equation. The degradation of the model is mainly manifested in the diffusion coefficient and response term approaching zero when the population density is zero or the cognitive state reaches the boundary. For this model, we have achieved the following theoretical breakthroughs: First, by using regularization techniques, we constructed a non-degenerate approximate system. Combining prior energy estimates with the fixed point theorem, we proved the existence of local classical solutions for this regularized system; subsequently, we constructed an appropriate Lyapunov function. Based on strict energy dissipation analysis and uniform prior estimates, we proved that under conditions such as bounded toxins and regular initial values, the classical solutions of the regularized system exist globally and remain bounded on the interval $[0, \infty )$ ultimately, based on this, through compactness theory and limit processes, the existence of the global weak solution for the original degenerate system is further derived. Numerical simulations verify the rationality of the theoretical results and visually demonstrate the dynamic regulatory effect of cognitive function on population tolerance.
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that substantially affects behaviour, social functioning and daily performance. However, long-term population-based evidence on its burden in Jordan remains limited.
Aims
This study aimed to assess trends in incidence, prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) due to ADHD in Jordan from 1990 to 2023.
Method
A population-based descriptive analysis was conducted using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 study. ADHD incidence, prevalence and YLDs in Jordan from 1990 to 2023 were extracted and stratified by gender and age group (2–9, 10–19 and 20–69 years). Estimates were reported as rates per 100 000 population, and absolute numbers with 95% uncertainty intervals, following standard GBD methods.
Results
ADHD burden was observed across all age groups in Jordan. Among children aged 2–9 years, incidence ranged from 279.9 to 352.3 per 100 000, prevalence exceeded 5000 per 100 000 in both 1990 and 2023 and YLD rates ranged from 214.8 to 262.8 per 100 000. In adolescents, the burden was concentrated among those aged 10–14 years, with prevalence around 526 per 100 000 and YLDs of 21 per 100 000 in both years; no estimates were reported for ages 15–19 years. In adults aged 20–69 years, although no incident cases were recorded, prevalence remained notable in 2023, ranging from 1626.8 per 100 000 (20–49 years) to 535.2 per 100 000 (50–69 years), with YLD rates between 69.1 and 22.4 per 100 000. Males consistently showed higher burden estimates than females across all age groups.
Conclusions
ADHD is a prevalent and a major source of non-fatal health loss in Jordan from early childhood through adulthood. These findings provide a comprehensive, long-term assessment of ADHD burden in Jordan and establish a robust evidence base for national, regional and global comparisons.
Election pledges are fundamental for representative democracy, linking parties’ campaigns before elections with their behavior afterwards. Yet little is known about voters’ awareness of these pledges before elections and how this affects post-election awareness of pledge fulfillment. Triangulating between a rich set of panel and pooled cross-sectional survey data surrounding the 2019 Danish national election (N = 10,322), we show that voters who were able to recognize and recall pledges before elections were more likely to be aware of their fulfillment status after the election. Furthermore, pre-election awareness mostly benefited people with less political interest, enabling these relatively disinterested voters to nevertheless hold parties accountable. These findings have important implications for our understanding of voters’ ability to make informed choices when they delegate power to parties at elections and hold them accountable afterwards.
Archaeology is in the midst of a technological revolution, particularly for data collection, first championed by light detection and ranging (lidar) in the early 2000s and now with widespread applications of unmanned aerial systems (UAS)-deployed remote sensing. While the importance of remote sensing for data collection and heritage conservation is known, less work has acknowledged the implications of remote sensing for field safety, particularly for disabled researchers. UAS offer a unique opportunity to explore circumstances that may affect mobility in the field and how advances in archaeological science can transform fieldwork by improving accessibility for disabled archaeologists. I argue that UAS can—and should—be improved to promote accessibility in archaeological fieldwork, due to their promotion of field safety, increased planning of daily tasks, and broader applications to community-engaged research. These interventions should be applied to the larger field of archaeology to improve labor management for researchers in all sectors of practice.
Reconstructions of Moche ritual sacrifice have relied heavily on iconographic depictions of elaborate rituals conducted on mountains and sacrifices at adobe temples. Scholars have categorized mountain scenes, proposed that Huaca de la Luna symbolized sacred mountains, and argued that one of the main mountain scenes entails the liberation of a figure known as Dios A. However, the large corpus of mountain iconography remains underanalyzed, and few existing publications incorporate data from mountainside sites. In this article, I propose a more specific Mountainside Sacrifice and Cave Opening mythic narrative encoded in these scenes, comparable to the Presentation Theme / Sacrifice Ceremony. I argue that future surveys and excavations must include thorough investigations of north coast mountains of Peru.
This work investigates projection-based reduced space–time models formulated in the frequency domain, employing space–time basis functions constructed with spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) to represent dominant spatio-temporal structures. Although frequency-domain formulations are well suited to capturing time-periodic solutions, such as unstable periodic orbits, this study focuses on computing long-time approximate periodic solutions of statistically stationary flows whose statistics resemble those of the underlying chaotic attractor. In contrast to reduced-order models based solely on spatial modes, a space–time formulation achieves simultaneous reduction in both space and time via Galerkin projection of the Navier–Stokes equations onto the SPOD basis using a space–time inner product, yielding a quadratic algebraic system for the amplitude coefficients. Approximate solutions of the reduced system are obtained by identifying coefficients that minimise an objective function corresponding to the sum of squared residuals across all frequencies and modes, quantifying violation of momentum conservation within the reduced subspace. A robust gradient-based optimisation algorithm is used to identify minima. The method is demonstrated for chaotic flow in a two-dimensional lid-driven cavity at a Reynolds number equal to 20 000, where solutions with extended temporal periods approximately fifteen times the dominant shear-layer time scale are sought. Even without closure models to represent truncated spatio-temporal triadic interactions, multiple reduced-order solutions are found that identify approximate periodic orbits which reproduce dominant dynamical flow features and recover with good fidelity to the statistical distribution of the training data used to construct the basis, although these solutions tend to overpredict energy near the truncation boundary.
This paper examines the educational experience in Sudan from 2023 until the present. In 2023, with the outbreak of the civil war, the Sudanese universities completely ceased operations. Since late 2025, there has been highly limited in-person teaching when safe in some universities, but this is not widespread or comprehensive due to the destruction of infrastructure. Under these circumstances, some professors and students resorted to developing alternative solutions, the most prominent of which was the use of WhatsApp as an educational platform for communication, lectures, discussions, and exams. The research presents my experience as a lecturer in archaeology at the University of Khartoum, where lectures were prepared in small PDF files, audio recordings of the explanations were sent, and then discussed within WhatsApp groups. The university also organized exams through multiple centers to overcome transportation difficulties and later launched an official electronic platform for distance learning, reflecting a significant digital transformation despite the war. The research concludes that this experience is unique globally and confirms the importance of innovation and flexibility in continuing the educational process during crises. WhatsApp is no longer just a means of social communication or family chatting. In Sudan, it has become an effective educational tool that has proven its worth across multiple universities. In the absence of official online platforms and the difficulty of accessing high-speed internet, WhatsApp provided a reliable alternative, especially since it requires little data and allows for the direct and rapid sending of audio, text, and video files.
Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) contains bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and saponins, which have been shown to influence cognition, mood, sleep, stress and related biomarkers. However, the evidence from human studies has not been systematically synthesised. To address this, we conducted a systematic review evaluating the effects of asparagus-based products on cognitive, affective, sleep outcomes and related biomarkers in adults. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Google Scholar and Amino Up Ltd’s website (up to April 2025) identified studies assessing asparagus supplementation in adults, following PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42025636834). Human studies that employed randomised controlled trials or quasi-experimental designs and assessed the effects of orally administered asparagus-based products on cognition, mood, sleep or relevant biomarkers were included. Eighteen studies (thirteen randomised controlled trials and three pre-post-studies; 503 participants) were included. Cognitive improvements were observed in reaction time, accuracy and mental fatigue, while mood and stress-related outcomes showed reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms. Sleep outcomes consistently demonstrated improvements in sleep quality and duration, while biomarker data showed effects on cortisol levels. Asparagus supplementation may offer modest benefits for cognition, mood and stress-related physiology, with particularly consistent effects on sleep quality. However, the magnitude of benefits varies by population, dose and duration, and the heterogeneity of interventions, small sample sizes and limited studies may constrain the generalisability of findings. Well-powered, long-term clinical trials are needed to determine optimal dosage, clarify mechanisms and assess efficacy across diverse populations.
This article examines the Rio-based nonpartisan organization, the Marielle Franco Institute’s digital strategies to appeal to Afro-Brazilian voters. The literature reveals that most Afro-Brazilian voters do not vote along racial lines. However, scholarship also reveals that politicians make racial appeals to Afro-Brazilian voters. I argue that the MFI uses digital media to mobilize Afro-Brazilian voters to support progressive political candidates. I find that it seeks to mobilize them in four ways. The first is the Marielle Franco Agenda, an interactive platform that features progressive political candidates with similar agenda issues as Franco. Second, they highlight political candidates that are practitioners of African-derived religions. The third is that it promotes coalition politics through its collaboration with another nonpartisan organization to promote progressive candidates, and lastly, the MFI highlights candidates with a pro-Black woman aesthetic that challenges the notion that political spaces are nonblack spaces.
Parliaments are equipped with accountability mechanisms to uncover and sanction executive misconduct, yet the variation in their use across countries and over time remains poorly understood. This article links the frequency with which various constellations of MPs initiate ad hoc parliamentary investigative committees (ICs) to the institutionalization of party systems. It argues that the closure of the party system in the governmental arena, and particularly the degree of alternation in government, fosters the use of ICs due to the enhanced clarity of responsibility and competitive pressures. This argument is tested using a novel dataset of IC proposals in 97 cabinets across 10 countries of Central and Eastern Europe from the early 2000s to 2024. The findings indicate that under closed party systems, these accountability mechanisms are initiated more frequently both by opposition parties and a portion of coalition parties without the support of the remaining coalition partners. The article adds to the comparative understanding of parliamentary accountability as exercised by both opposition and government parties.
In this paper, we formulate a rational analog of the fall Delta theorem and the Delta square conjecture. We find a new dinv statistic on fall-decorated paths on a $(m+k) \times (n+k)$ rectangle that simultaneously extends the previously known dinv statistics on decorated square objects and nondecorated rectangular objects. We prove a symmetric function formula for the $q,t$-generating function of fall-decorated rectangular Dyck paths as a skewing operator applied to $e_{m,n+km}$ and, conditionally on the rectangular paths conjecture, an analog formula for fall-decorated rectangular paths.
This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to reducing free sugar intakes while participants were in the process of attempting to do this. Sixty-two adults with free sugar intakes >5% total energy intake; participants in a randomised controlled trial examining the effects of three different dietary recommendations versus control for reducing free sugar intakes were interviewed at either 1, 2, 4, 8, or 12 weeks after receiving their recommendation. Data were analysed using thematic analysis and framework analysis based on recommendation received, time for change, and success in reducing free sugar intakes at 12 weeks. Thematic analysis revealed seven interactive themes leading to dietary change: ‘Is it possible?’; ‘Power of knowledge’; ‘Personal balance and empowerment’; ‘Habitual approach’; ‘Realities of life’; ‘Extensive awareness and viewpoint’; and ‘Proof and impact’. Framework analysis revealed greater knowledge, including knowledge related to practical solutions, in intervention groups compared to control; greater intentions and expectations at the start of the process, followed by increasing or decreasing engagement and satisfaction over time, with noticeable physical and subjective proof occurring from 4 weeks; and active engagement, with growing confidence and motivation in those who ended the trial having reduced their free sugar intakes compared to more passive attitudes in those less successful. Our findings demonstrate clear variation in barriers and facilitators to reducing free sugar intakes throughout the process, dependent also on recommendation received and individual orientation. Suggestions for improving free sugar intake reduction can be offered based on these differences.
Bradbaori is a speculative architectural intervention and a thought experiment that attempts to repair the watershed in Los Angeles by reimagining the city’s famed landmark - the Bradbury Building – as a stepwell or baori. As climate change accelerates, Los Angeles is increasingly experiencing extreme swings between drought and heavy rainfall, a phenomenon scientists describe as hydroclimate whiplash (Lin II 2025). Intense storms follow periods of prolonged dryness, causing flood warnings and wildfire seasons. Yet much of this sudden influx of rainwater is lost as runoff, rushing through urban channels and out into the Pacific without being captured. The future of water access in Los Angeles is therefore directly tied to reconciling this drought-and-deluge cycle. Building resilience against hydroclimate whiplash requires rethinking how large-scale engineering and infrastructure projects engage the city’s watershed, shifting from reactive flood control measures like the concretization of the LA River, toward systems that can absorb, store, and steward water during moments of excess. Represented through a short film, Bradbaori is a worldbuilding research project that explores ways to build resilience.
