A droplet impacting a deep fluid bath is as common as rain over the ocean. If the impact is sufficiently gentle, the mediating air layer remains intact, and the droplet may rebound completely from the interface. In this work, we experimentally investigate the role of translational bath motion on the bouncing to coalescence transition. Over a range of parameters, we find that the relative bath motion systematically decreases the normal Weber number required to transition from bouncing to merging. Direct numerical simulations demonstrate that the depression created during impact combined with the translational motion of the bath enhances the air-layer drainage on the upstream side of the droplet, ultimately favouring coalescence. A simple geometric argument is presented that rationalises the collapse of the experimental threshold data, extending what is known for the case of axisymmetric normal impacts to the more general three-dimensional scenario of interest herein.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among children and youth aged 10–24, and nearly three-quarters of suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite global efforts, children and youth mental health and suicide prevention remain underprioritized in national policy and are often deployed separately in LMICs. Governments should develop standalone, multisectoral mental health policies for children and youth that integrate suicide prevention strategies and that address social determinants of suicide risk. This commentary aims to inform national policymakers, global health and international development actors, and researchers engaged in the mental health and suicide prevention of children and youth in LMICs.
Little is known about self-harm in children involved in family justice proceedings, particularly in private family courts in England and Wales.
Aims
To examine records of self-harm in children involved in private and public law proceedings using population-level linked data.
Method
A retrospective e-cohort study of children aged under 18 years, using linked health and family justice (Cafcass Cymru) data (2011–2018). Family court involvement was recorded from age 0 to 17 years. Incidence of self-harm was recorded from age 10 to 17 years to fit with the standard definition of self-harm. Annual incidence of self-harm over time across general practitioner (GP), emergency department and hospital admissions for individual children in private and public law proceedings were compared with a non-court cohort using Poisson regression. Self-harm following court proceedings was compared with an age- and gender-matched non-court cohort using Cox regression.
Results
Adjusted self-harm rates were higher in court-involved children than the non-court cohort (incident rate ratios (IRRs) (95% CI), private: GP 1.8 (1.6–2.1); emergency department 1.4 (1.2–1.7); admissions 1.8 (1.5–2.1); public: GP 4.6 (4.1–5.3); emergency department 5.0 (4.3–5.8); admissions 5.0 (4.3–5.8)). Compared with matched comparison children, risk of self-harm was higher following private (adjusted hazard ratios 2.0 (1.7–2.2)) and public court proceedings (hazard ratio 2.3 (2.7–3.8)). Hazard ratios were greater for those from less deprived areas and those with no history of self-harm.
Conclusions
The elevated risk of self-harm in children involved in public law proceedings is well recognised. Our study highlights risk in children in private family justice proceedings. Elevated risk among those from less deprived areas and those with no history of self-harm may reflect circumstances associated with family justice involvement, resulting in rates comparable to children with other pre-existing vulnerabilities. Contact with family justice is an opportunity to offer preventative support.
Team science, defined as scientific collaboration across disciplines and knowledge domains, has become essential for translational research, yet teams face recurrent challenges that can impede progress and are often difficult to overcome without additional support. We describe the implementation and initial outcomes of our Team Advice and Consultation Service (TACS), a program designed to address team science challenges at a research-intensive academic medical center engaged in translational science across a broad range of disciplines.
Methods:
Grounded in Knowledge-to-Action framework and Transdisciplinary Innovation theory, TACS provides tailored, case-specific support across the team lifecycle.
Results:
Through thematic analysis of consultations with seven teams (2023–2024), we identified five recurrent challenge domains: organization/structural complexity, team leadership and management, team dynamics and communication, authorship and credit allocation, and conflict resolution.
Conclusion:
Findings underscore the value of structured support for team science and provide insights and potential strategies for institutions seeking to implement similar services.
Food banks in the United States are part of the robust food system that addresses hunger among the population. A comprehensive description of the challenges faced by food banks in the United States is crucial to understanding and responding to the diverse needs. A careful assessment of the literature highlights opportunities not only to improve the efficiency of services, but also to identify strategies and strengthen partnerships to build a sustainable food system.
Technical Summary
This systematic scoping review aimed to characterize the challenges in the US food banks and recognize opportunities for a sustainable food system. Five electronic search engines/databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library, were searched for literature published between 2013 and 2025. The search results were reported per the PRISMA guidelines. Of the 123 selected articles, a majority covered operational challenges (n = 26), strategies to improve operations (n = 16), challenges related to nutrition and health (n = 25), followed by beneficiaries (n = 20), emergencies (n = 15), resources (n = 14), and chronic diseases (n = 7). Supply chain, partnerships, distribution, and adherence to equity principles were included under operational challenges. Fiscal, human resource, and infrastructural challenges were discussed under resource challenges. Beneficiaries, particularly the elderly, people with disabilities, refugees, and their unmet needs, were documented. During the pandemic, a lack of trained staff and a disrupted supply chain tested the resilience of food banks. The need to consider the participants’ nutritional needs was recognized across a few domains. Opportunities for sustainable food systems emerged through exploring local resources, partnerships, and community engagements. Innovations in technology and efficient inventory management systems to minimize food waste, and education initiatives to foster self-management emerged as opportunities. Policies that advocate food and nutrition security will create a resilient food system.

People with serious illnesses often experience spiritual and emotional pain, manifesting in conditions such as depression, anxiety, and demoralization. Emerging research in psychedelic-assisted therapy has shown efficacy in treating these conditions. Despite evidence that psychedelics frequently occasion mystical/spiritual experiences in participants, there has been little research on support for spiritual, existential, religious, and theological needs, including the use of chaplains on therapeutic teams. Spiritual wellbeing outcomes have been inconsistently used and reported on in current psychedelics studies. The aims of this article are to identify and review patient-centered outcome measures focused on spiritual wellbeing for use in psychedelic research.
Methods
A literature review of instruments was conducted, with 286 articles included, identifying spiritual wellbeing measures within the palliative care population.
Results
Three measures were selected for inclusion: Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being 12- Item Scale (FACIT-Sp-12), European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Spiritual Well-being Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-SWB-32), and the National Institutes of Health Healing Experience of All Life Stressors (NIH-HEALS). Instrument development, psychometric properties, and use in research for each are discussed.
Significance of Results
Suitability in the context of psychedelic-assisted therapy with the palliative care population includes strong reliability and validity, and they should be accessible to people with various spiritual traditions, practices, and sources of connection. They should be patient-centered in their development, involve multiple stakeholders, and be appropriate for use with palliative care populations. According to these criteria and its orientation toward identifying spiritual change in the context of serious illness, the NIH-HEALS is recommended for wider use in psychedelic-assisted therapy.
This article examines a monumental structure in the North Pontic Steppe that was repurposed as a burial mound in the late fourth millennium BCE. The authors argue that this repurposing reflects a pattern of Yamna appropriation of ritual spaces, conceptualised as a ‘continuity of sacred spaces’.
The overall aim is to understand the practices, views, and needs of health technology assessment (HTA) practitioners worldwide regarding the use of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) data for generating cost-effectiveness evidence.
Methods
We invited HTA practitioners in sixty countries to complete an online survey on their perspectives on the measurement and valuation of health. We performed descriptive analyses of the overall sample, examined response differences across six regions, and pooled responses to open-ended questions for content analysis.
Results
A total of 238 individuals from 45 countries completed the survey, with a mean response number per country of 5.28 (SD: 4.45). Most responses came from public sector employees (seventy-two percent), and ninety percent were involved in cost-effectiveness-related work. The top three most frequently used utility instruments were EQ-5D, SF-6D, and EQ-5D-Y, and the elicitation methods were time trade-off, visual analogue scale, and standard gamble. Health-state preferences of the general public from another country were more frequently used than the preferences of the local public. Common data quality issues were poor sample representativeness and a small sample size of utility data. In Asia and Western Europe, the top-voted research priority was developing utility instruments that capture both healthcare and social care impact. In four regions, developing utility instruments for children was the second-highest research priority.
Conclusions
The survey addressed important knowledge gaps regarding current practices in measuring and valuing HRQoL in HTA and provided insights into HTA practitioners’ views on instruments, methods, and data-related challenges and needs for generating HRQoL evidence.
The article advances debates on just transition by addressing both conceptual and practical dimensions of justice and development. It proposes an integrated evaluative framework that bridges justice and development perspectives, which are often treated separately in the literature. – Drawing on the capability approach, the framework links normative evaluation with participatory co-production, thereby supporting the design of more transformative just transition policies. Based on an extensive review of the literature, the article identifies seven dimensions of a comprehensive conception of social-ecological justice – distributive, epistemic, restorative, planetary, intergenerational, ecological, and procedural – and distinguish two ideal types of development – growth-driven development and social-ecological development. We argue that the extent to which the dimensions of justice are realised, both in number and degree, determines the scope and depth of shifts from growth-driven to social-ecological development and thereby shapes the transformative potential of just transition policies. The article applies this framework empirically through an evaluation of the International Labour Organisation’s approach to just transition. By grounding the analysis in a capability-based conception of justice and development, our framework positions co-production as central to processes of transformation that seek to be just. As part of this co-production process, the article calls for a more engaged and ethically grounded scholarship that contributes actively to the collective pursuit of just and sustainable futures.
This article examines the rice distribution network of the Japanese community in Guangdong during the Japanese occupation. It emphasizes the hierarchical patterns and exploitative nature of the rationing system established by the occupation authorities. Securing food was a daily struggle for most people during the Second Sino-Japanese War, as combatants competed for resources in wartime China. In the case of the Japanese Empire, Japanese forces in each occupied area and colony negotiated for external food supplies annually while also deciding to extract more food surpluses from their jurisdictions for local consumption. Food, primarily grains, was centrally controlled and redistributed by the Japanese occupiers. The unprecedented dominance the Japanese held over food supplies benefited certain groups but was detrimental to most local populations. This article focuses on the sources of rice in occupied Guangdong and the methods by which the Japanese collected and allocated it. The inability of the occupying authority to revive the local food economy and secure additional foodstuffs for the region unintentionally severed vital urban lifelines; it also strengthened the self-interested tendencies of the occupying authorities to create exclusive food-supplying networks and rationing systems. In this case, the food demands of certain groups, mainly the Japanese in occupied Guangdong, were met at the expense of others. This article argues that self-serving calculations on the part of the Japanese, rather than mere cruelty and incompetence, should also be considered when discussing the history of occupied Guangdong.
We present new and updated methods for reducing transport caused by electrostatic ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) driven turbulence in quasi-isodynamic (QI) configurations. We first show an updated model for the threshold (critical) gradient of localised toroidal ITG modes. It is then argued that it is desirable for ITG modes to ‘split’ and localise in separate curvature drift wells, which is leveraged to produce a six-field-period QI configuration with a high critical gradient. We show that the destabilising effect of kinetic electrons (Costello & Plunk 2025 J. Plasma Phys. vol. 91, p. E12) on localised ITG modes can be minimised in a magnetic field structure, which we dub ‘inverse mirror’. Applying a general optimisation target that improves ITG stability above the critical gradient yields an inverse mirror configuration which maintains heat fluxes below or equal to the W7-X high mirror configuration for a range of applied density gradients.
We investigate the interaction between two equally signed neutral vortices, namely vortices with a vanishing area integral of vorticity in inviscid non–divergent two-dimensional flows or a vanishing volume integral of potential vorticity anomaly in three-dimensional quasi-geostrophic (QG) flows. The vortices have a continuous (potential) vorticity distribution, and are linear combinations of appropriately normalised cylindrical (or spherical) Bessel functions of order 0, truncated at a zero of the Bessel function of order 1. Some pairs of neutral vortices reach an oscillating near-equilibrium state, attracting and repelling each other as a result of the exchange of small amounts of vorticity in their peripheries. This vorticity exchange generates a dipolar moment within each vortex which separates the vortices slightly, whereas the subsequent radial redistribution of the vorticity causes the vortices to come back closer again. The interaction is slower and weaker in three-dimensional QG flows, as the potential vorticity exchange primarily takes place close to the horizontal mid-plane of the vortices. These results have been corroborated using two radically different numerical models, namely a pseudo-spectral model and a high-resolution contour-advection model, both in two and in three dimensions. The observed oscillation mechanism could explain the persistence of geophysical vortices under the influence of other vortices and their ability to form stable vortex structures without experiencing vortex merging.
Dietary intervention represents a promising strategy for managing post-surgical patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). This study aims to evaluate the effects of a modified Mediterranean diet (MMD) supplemented with partial enteral nutrition (PEN) for 4–5 weeks on quality of life in post-surgical CD patients, compared with exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN). The study was conducted at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The primary outcome was quality of life, measured using the 22-item inflammatory bowel disease quality-of-life questionnaire (IBDQOL-22) at the end of the intervention. Secondary outcomes included nutritional status and disease-related characteristics. Among 115 screened patients, forty-six were randomised to either the EEN group (n 24) or the MMD supplemented with PEN group (n 22). Twenty-three patients in the EEN group and twenty-two in the MMD supplemented with PEN group completed the study and were included for analysis. At the end of the intervention, both groups achieved similar 22-item inflammatory bowel disease quality-of-life questionnaire (IBDQOL-22) scores (EEN v. MMD supplemented with PEN: 88·43 (sd 9·17) v. 87·57 (sd 7·38), P = 0·734). In addition, both groups exhibited comparable nutritional status and disease-related characteristics (all P > 0·05). These results suggest that MMD supplemented with PEN provides comparable clinical benefits to EEN in post-surgical CD patients and may serve as an alternative nutritional strategy.
A specific challenge of qualitative methods teaching is including skills for both data generation and data analysis, with recent audits of political science curricula revealing that the latter is particularly neglected at the undergraduate level. There are few published discussions on the importance of teaching analytical mechanics or guidance provided on how best to find and use data for teaching. This article explains how we integrated an exercise that enabled our class of more than 100 undergraduate students to generate their own original data and then to practice deductive coding and analysis. In addition to discussing our teaching experiences, we draw on interviews with our students to reflect on the successes and challenges of our approach and to offer suggestions to other instructors who want to replicate our strategy in a large undergraduate setting.
People’s expectations about the outcomes of elections often match their preferences, suggesting that people engage in wishful thinking. This often-documented link between people’s preferences and expectations is particularly pervasive and difficult to debias. One recent exception was a study by Rose and Aspiras (2020, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, 33(4), 411–426), where participants who went through a brief perspective-taking intervention showed a reduced preference–expectation link when making predictions about the 2016 U.S. presidential election. We used a similar intervention and extended their research to the 2020 U.S. presidential election. In contrast to Rose and Aspiras, the link between people’s preferences and their expectations was not affected by the perspective-taking intervention. Regardless of whether participants took the perspective of another person or not, they exhibited a strong tendency to predict that their preferred candidate would win. Differences between our study and the study by Rose and Aspiras are discussed, as are the implications of our findings.
Autochthonous transmission of dengue in southern Europe has emerged as a growing public health concern, especially in regions such as Spain, due to the expansion of mosquito vector species, such as Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, introduced into these regions. This article presents an overview of the situation based on the analysis of the different reports published by international and national health agencies, together with key scientific studies on autochthonous transmission of dengue in Europe and Spain. Through this work, the factors considered to be contributing or hypothesized drivers of the spread of the virus on the European continent, such as climate change, human mobility, and the proliferation of mosquito vectors, are described. It explores the cases of autochthonous transmission documented in several European countries and Spain. In addition, the surveillance protocols implemented by Spanish health authorities and the health responses to outbreaks in Spain are also examined. Finally, the risk of future transmission in Spain is assessed, and strategies are proposed to strengthen epidemiological surveillance, improve preparedness for possible outbreaks, and optimize vector-control policies in the context of global change.
In 1936, one of the largest mass disrobings of Buddhist monks and novices in modern history took place in northern Thailand. Around 1,000 monks and novices were disrobed, with some estimates as high as 2,000. The disrobed monastic clergy were members of the ‘Tiger Order’. The movement took its name from its leader, Khruba Srivichai (1878–1939), who was born in the Year of the Tiger. The arrest of Srivichai and the subsequent mass disrobing were crucial turning points in the formation of the modern nation-state of Thailand. Nonetheless, this extraordinary mass disrobing has been virtually erased from historical memory. Drawing on archival sources and oral histories conducted with over 200 northern monks and villagers, this article seeks both to highlight the historical fact of the mass disrobing and analyse the process of its erasure from memory. Analysing four phases in the chronopolitics of erasure, this article shows how processes of remembering and forgetting underlie the paradox of both the maintenance of memories of Srivichai and the disappearance of memories of the widespread disrobing.
This review paper provides an overview of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition’s (SACN’s) report ‘Feeding young children aged 1 to 5 years’. The purpose of the report was to (1) review the scientific basis of current recommendations for feeding children aged 1 to 5 years, (2) consider evidence on developmental stages and other factors that influence eating behaviour and diversification of the diet in the early years and (3) make recommendations for policy, practice and research. This report was based on a comprehensive assessment of the systematic review (SR) literature and also evidence provided by the Diet and Nutrition Survey of Infants and Young Children and the National Diet Nutrition Survey. Dietary survey data indicated that the diets of children aged 1 to 5 years in the UK did not meet current dietary recommendations for several nutrients. Intakes of energy, free sugars and protein exceeded recommendations, while dietary fibre intakes were below the recommended level for this age group. Children from lower socio-economic status households or from certain ethnic groups may be at risk of inadequate intakes of Fe, Zn, vitamin A and vitamin D. SR evidence indicated that in children aged 1 to 5 years, higher free sugars intake is associated with increased dental caries, higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with increased risk of overweight/obesity and higher child BMI is associated with higher risk of adult overweight/obesity. Based on the evidence, SACN has made recommendations to improve the diets of young children in the UK.
This paper describes the generation of a target plasma and first experiments on neutral beam injection into the Compact Axisymmetric Toroid (CAT) device. The target plasma produced by a washer-stack gun captures 20 % of a 1.7 MW hydrogen beam injected into a main fast-ion confinement region. The work provides a foundation for future experiments with higher injection power and additional diagnostics to investigate the accumulation of large-orbit fast ions, high plasma beta effects and possible magnetic field reversal.
In its 2025 medical training review, National Health Service (NHS) England highlighted the urgent need to modernise postgraduate medical education in England to meet NHS population needs while supporting doctors’ professional aspirations. The psychiatry of intellectual disability, a subspecialty marked by declining recruitment, uneven service provision and limited research capacity, provides a critical test case for these reforms. This article applies the 11 recommendations from the review to doctors training in this subspecialty. Drawing on recent evidence, it advocates for equitable, flexible and academically grounded reforms that embed psychiatry of intellectual disability within mainstream medical education, workforce planning and national health policy transformation.
